My Audition Experience: SUNY Purchase

Hey, everybody! Yesterday, February 6, I had my SUNY Purchase audition in San Francisco! Most of you who are auditioning for Purchase have probably already auditioned, seeing as how there are only a couple of audition days left, but I'm going to describe my audition experience anyway!

Purchase, unlike the other four colleges I've already tried out for, doesn't break down the audition day into morning session, afternoon session, etc. They have you sign up for exactly what time you want to audition. They give you a whole list of times in ten minute intervals, (10:00, 10:10, 10:20, etc.), to choose from. I picked 10 AM.

I arrived at the Hilton at around 9:30 and went up to 6th floor of the 3rd tower. About halfway down a long, narrow hallway was a sign-in desk for Purchase, operated by a friendly, funny woman who I can't remember the name of, unfortunately, so I'll just call her Nice Woman... Because of the staggered "call times" for the Purchase auditioners, there were never more than 4 auditioners (including myself) out in the hallway at the sime time. There weren't any practice rooms and everybody was generally quiet because BU, Fordham, and Rutgers were all auditioning a couple of rooms over.

Anyways, Nice Woman gave me a payment form and two auditor's forms to fill out. The payment form was just to confirm that you paid the $46.50 and the auditor's forms were just about your monologues, what high school do you go to, etc. The auditor form asked for my high school address and my GPA and SAT scores, but Nice Woman said that it's okay if you don't know that stuff off-hand. Another interesting thing about the auditor's forms: There were 4 check boxes at the top, labeled "Admit," "Alt I," "Alt II," and "Deny." Auditioners aren't supposed to fill that part out, though I was a little bit tempted to check "Admit." Ha ha.

So, after I filled out the sheets, I brought them back to Nice Woman, who then took from me my resume, my headshot, my check, my essay, and my letter of recommendation. BE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THOSE THINGS WITH YOU!

I was called into the audition room around 9:57. Nice Woman introduced me to the two auditors, gave them all of the papers, and left. I was invited to take a seat at the table for a short interview. We talked about my high school's theatre department, my goals, etc. Then, I did my two monologues, sang my song for the first time out of all 5 auditions so far. After my song, they thanked me and I left at around 10:08.

To my understanding, having the auditors film your monologues is like a callback. I wasn't filmed, so I don't know for sure. But, people definitely WERE filmed, because I saw a video camera on the auditors' desk.

Anyway, I didn't get a "callback," but that's understandable, considering how unprepared I was after not having any auditions since CMU almost 2 weeks ago. But, whatever. Hopefully I'll get on a waitlist? Nice Woman says that EVERYBODY finds out about their status March 8.

Overall, the Purchase People were friendly. The audition itself was simple: no parent info sessions, no holding rooms, no practice places, etc. But, then again, this was my first off-campus audition, so the "hotel audition" atmosphere was kind of jarring compared to what I've been used to.

Up next: Rutgers, February 7 in LA...

OG7, I’m pulling for you. It’s a shame we haven’t crossed paths at the CMU, Tisch, or Purchase auditions. Good catch on the Purchase forms about the admit boxes! My S only has one audition left himself - next week @ BU. Break a leg with your Rutgers audition, and keep us posted.

Thanks, jbehlend! Break a leg for your son!
