My Chance at Brown

I’m going to apply to WUSTL, Chicago, Williams, and possibly Vassar this fall. I was looking at Brown in February, but removed it from my list because I thought I couldn’t get in. I’ve been looking at Brown again recently and it seems like a great fit for me; however, I’m still unsure if I can get in.
I’m planning on majoring in art history, but I am also really interested in studying foreign languages and taking studio art classes. I am retaking the SAT in October and retaking the SAT IIs in November. Yes, I know the SAT II scores are low, but I rushed into taking them and had about 2 weeks to study. My scores in November should be significantly better.

Here are my stats:
SAT: 2060, CR: 700, W: 690,M: 690
SAT II: US History- 620, Math 1- 630
GPA: 4.6 W (may be higher, I will know at the start of the new semester)
AP English test : 4
Top 10% of class

Junior year classes: AP English 3, AP US History, Pre-AP Spanish 3, Pre-AP Algebra 2, Pre-AP Physics, Graphic Design and Illustration, Pre-AP Studio Art 2

Expected Senior year classes: AP English 4, AP Government, AP Economics, Pre-AP Pre-Cal, AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology, AP Spanish 4,IB Art, Office Aid to counselors ( I had an open block, and I could get a good rec. from them)
This schedule might change

ECs:Art Club president since Sophomore year( this year we’re becoming a National Art Honor Society chapter)
NHS member
Teen Docent at Dallas Museum of Art this summer, I’m looking into doing some more volunteer work there during the school year
volunteer at grandmother’s church
Celped design and paint mural at the square in my town along with students from the University of North Texas
Volunteer at the Children’s art tent at the Arts and Jazz Fest in '10 and '11.

Other: I was accepted to Bard College at Simon’s Rock my Sophomore year, but I couldn’t attend due to financial reasons
I have been a Type 1 Diabetic since August 2008.

Looks like you have a fair chance in my opinion. You’ll probably get a higher score for SAT II your second time, so the scores shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The extra curricular activities look great! The only thing is, it’s not just the activities and scores that get you in. Write a kick ass essay that really shows who you are and your goals. Also, get really good reference letters. The thing about Ivy Leagues is that they look for intellectual and extremely mature students and they look for that in the reference letters.

Good luck! :)

There are a few changes to my schedule. I can’t take AP Psychology (it is a blow off class anyways) due to scheduling conflicts. So now, I’ll have a dismiss last block. Will that hurt me? I’m already taking a ton of APs. My GPA dropped to 4.53, it was 4.56 before and I was rounding up. I am, however now in the top 6% of my class.
Another thing, I scored above the national average on the National Spanish exam the past two years, which is pretty good considering our school has only been doing this for two years and doesn’t train for it like other schools. My Sophomore year I didn’t get a medal, but this past year I got bronze. I don’t know if this will help any, but i do want to study multiple languages in college so it might.

Thanks for your feedback!

You should definitley retake your SAT II

Yes, I know. Those scores were due to rushing into taking it. I realized that many of the colleges I planned on applying to required it, so I signed up. I bought prep books, but I didn’t have much time to use them. I’m retaking it in November, so I have plenty of time to study. I’m also retaking the SAT in October and hoping for 2200. I’m taking a prep course to help with that.

Oh, and I’m certified in Adobe Photoshop CS4. I know it says nothing about my academics, but maybe it sets me apart from other students. I’m not sure. What do you guys think?

U of Chicago- High Reach
WUSTL- Reach
Williams- High Reach
Vassar- Match
Brown- Reach

But this may all change as your scores increase.

The unique EC’s help a lot though.

My chances were based more around current SATs

I’m thinking about applying ED to Brown or UChicago, but I’m not retaking the SAT IIs until November. Is there any way for me to apply ED?

Unless you would be totally ecstatic to get into Brown (or U Chicago) without knowing about the other, and without wondering if you get denied, if only you had waited to have better scores, could you have gotten in, then I would say wait. (ie wait. (and make sure you are studying like crazy for those tests)). Normally I would say that your grades, courses and def scores would not get you into Brown, but Brown cannot have all premeds and IR/econ students, so your interests, coupled with dealing with the diabetes, give you a bit of a “hook”. Good luck , give it a try and work hard to get those scores (and first semester grades) as high as you can.

Also with ED, you do not get to compare financial aide packages, and that sounds like it might be an issue.

Well, I will have my SAT reasoning scores back in time for ED, but not SAT IIs. I know some colleges allow you to submit the November scores when you get them and after the ED app deadline.I was just wondering if Brown did that.

Dude, calm down. Your stats are likely to get you in but the point is can you get in after being accepted? I may remind you the Bard acceptance. So it might be a good time to strengthen your financial aid request package, so that it does not become a factor. Besides you and I are in the same boat. I applied to Duke and got accepted at my sophomore’s but the financial thing mattered! So try working on that.

What do you mean by that?
