My chance in HYPS?

GPA: 4.4 w, 3.9 uw
SAT: 2030
SAT IIs: Under 700 :'(
Rank: Top 3%

Blahhhhhhhhhh

In all honesty, it would probably be more difficult for you than some others; rank and GPA are good enough, but SAT is slightly below par, and SAT IIs are also below par (at least 700 is ideal). However, these numbers really don’t tell the whole story. People with 4.0s (unweighted) and 2400s routinely get rejected from HYPS, while people with similar stats to yours get accepted. Quantitative judging isn’t everything; what kinds of qualitative stuff stand out about you? Essays + other such criteria will play a big role…

You will need a massive boost in both in your SAT and SAT II’s to gain any shot at admission.

Need more details.

yeah need more details
like what you got on each part of the SATs
and ECs
but… its gonna be difficult if you got a below 700 one the SATIIs
and try to bring you SATs up a little bit
at least a 2100

Agreed. Even with stellar EC’s you need a higher SAT I score and higher SAT II scores.

Like what others have said, we need more info but do not get discourage by what others are saying about your SAT scores. Although its below average, you still have a chance if you have some unique aspects/hooks. Good luck.

You definitely have a chance although it is very small with those scores.

Scores are important but not everything there really isn’t enough information, but with those scores alone I’d say you have a very low chance.

Assuming that you have no ECs,

no chance at all.

SAT I
Math: 680
Reading: 630
Writing: 720
SAT IIs
Match 2C: 670
Spanish: 590
Lit: 570
All once taken
ECs:
CSF Sealbearer
Full time tutor
Youth and Government- Mock legislation in Sacramento, CA
Junior Statesmen of America- Leadership position & 4 conventions
Operation Christmas Child
Beginning and Intermediate Dance
Peer Mediation
Church member and Cabinet member

Ok to the people giving so called ‘chances’ with just the subjective… you’re idiots. Even if it was 2400, 4.9gpa, valedictorian you can’t give an accurate chance.

The truth is all we can tell you is you are qualified to apply, and that you probably will pass the secretary’s grade check.

As for your updated stats…
SAT: On the low end, but it’s over 2000 so you’re fine. You have what you have.
SATII’s: Below 600 is iffy, so hopefully you are tipped or hooked.
Rank: Not bad, gives a good perspective.
EC’s: YIG = Good program  , average EC’s but most are sort of boring.

As a tutor was this a job or volunteer?

What is your ethnicity?

Essays? Rec’s? Supplements?

Verdict: Minimal chances as an ORM, low chances as an URM. But you still should apply. What does it matter what we say?

Haha. Yeah, thanks Mal77. I like down to earth people like you. Well I’m a Korean Female and my tutor job is volunteer. But thanks for the optimism, everyone. And we’ll just see how things roll around in a couple of weeks. I’ve just come to terms with my “chances” and where God wants me to end up! Good luck class of 2013!

Bad luck being korean… from what i recall the koreans’ competition lies in other koreans and as they all get 2400s with ecs like imo gold icho gold etc… lets hope they think ur unique (essays recs and interview)
best of luck. and if you could please chance me too itd be nice :D

Sorry to say it, but being Korean really hurts you. You are currently a reach for Cal or UCLA. Look in that direction, or at a smaller schools like the Clairemont Colleges. All are excellent schools where you’ve got a decent shot. Ivy-wise, you might have a shot at Barnard (Columbia). PM me if you want more details.

Your scores are high enough that you might have a much better chance if you take them again. I think you will need to take both SAT and SATII again (or take different SATII’s that you might do better in).

THERE ARE NO QUOTAS!!! And there is no big so called “overqualified Asian” discrimination plot by top colleges!!!

Whites and Asians share the same acceptance rates to top colleges once legacy and athletics are taken into question. I have no idea where this myth originated (probably from frustrated parents looking to blame the system) but it is so blatantly untrue that now it borders on the pinnacle of collective neuroticism.
