@Pinchaputa: OK, first thing, YOU ARE NOT STUPID. DO NOT refer to yourself that way. And don’t listen to anyone who says things like that. Your SAT scores went down, but maybe you didn’t sleep well the night before or were dehydrated or anxious… Little things can really affect your ability to test well. Have you tried the ACT? Some people score higher on the ACT.
What major are you interested in? Anything in Business and Engineering will be very much of a stretch at UT Austin and TAMU. TAMU only enrolls 1000 Freshman in their business school, and the Engineering schools require a high Math score as they want to make sure that you can handle the very rigorous Math classes.
Your Class Rank and test scores are much more important than your Extra Curricular activities and volunteering. I think that college admissions reviewers just want to see that you are doing more with your time outside of HS than staying in your room and playing on your computer/phone. They want to see if you can manage your time wisely.
About your chances: I think that they are great for UNT and UT-D.I don’t have any knowledge about those schools other than UNT is pretty big, (40,000 students, I think) and Denton is a smallish town. UT-Dallas is mostly a commuter school.
UT Austin is a serious stretch for anyone not in the top X percentage (can’t remember if it is 7 or 8% now or even less) and with very high test scores. You could get CAPped for UT-Austin with the chance to get to Austin after starting out at a different campus.
For TAMU, it looks like you are right at the top 25% of your HS class. That is awesome!! If you can get your test score to the Academic Threshold, you would be an Academic Admit. Check the TAMU website for info on Academic Admissions.
TAMU offers the ACT test on campus that is scored quickly and only used for TAMU, can’t be sent anywhere else. That info can also be found on the TAMU website.
Time is getting short until the application deadline, but if you can take the time to make a trip to CStat to take that ACT, it could really help you. Taking the test there shows TAMU that you are serious about wanting to attend. Also, that would give you the opportunity to also schedule an official campus visit, and an adviser visit for your target major and you might even be able to sit in on a class if you can go on a regular school day. All of those things great to do and that way you can see if TAMU is a good fit for you. If you just go on a football game day, you might get overwhelmed with the crowds. Even if you can get closer to the Academic Admit score, that would really help.
TAMU offers Full Admissions, Blinn-TEAM (co-enrolling and taking classes at both TAMU and Blinn College in Bryan), and PSA (starting out at another campus, fulfilling requirements and then going to CStat).
I have 2 Aggie daughters. One graduated TAMU in 2016. She was top 27% of her 2012 HS and was close to or exceeded the Academic Admit threshold scores for her year. She was offered Full Admissions.
My younger daughter is currently a Sophomore on TAMU Blinn-TEAM. She had a gpa of 3.5 unweighted, 4.7 weighted, was Top 53% with SAT 1250 and ACT 27. Only one Dual Credit English class. She had a 4 year EC on HS campus plus another competitive team off campus and NO VOLUNTEERING as she had no time beyond school and the 2 ECs. We did not know about the ACT on the TAMU campus or she would have taken it there. She did take an official campus tour on a regular school day, had a meeting with an adviser and sat in on a class. I think that those things plus good Letters of Recommendation from 2 teachers (one Longhorn and one Aggie) were things that were in her favor and offset her low class rank at a very competitive 6A school.
Blinn-TEAM turned out to be a great offer, she is living the Aggie life in Aggieland! She takes classes at both TAMU campus and the Blinn-Bryan campus. She can do everything a Full admissions student can do EXCEPT PLAY AN NCAA SPORT. (Not that she wanted to, LOL) That’s it. In everything else, she is equal. No one in CStat cares if someone is on Blinn-TEAM. A lot of full admits take classes at Blinn due to cost and scheduling issues. And non-science majors often take math or science at Blinn and Engineering majors take English or History or other electives at Blinn. And they also offer Foreign Languages.
Good luck. I hope that you can take the ACT in CStat and bring your score up to the Academic Admit threshold. And BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!! Set goals and plan how to make them happen.
