...And I just realized you're in-state. Your chances are good, but last year Carolina didn't admit anyone from the waitlist.. maybe it will change this year!

Ladyjournalist: There is a very big difference between waitlisted and deffered from ea. Because the OP was deffered he will simply go into the RD pile.

Prodj: The best way to tell what your chances are is to talk to others who were admitted/deffered/rejected at your school and see how their class rank matches with yours (also you can ask your GC about previous years). It is my opinion that UNC has a cutoff point w/ class rank (with flexibility of course) and if you are too low you don't have much of a chance. For most schools this is around top 10% but they will go farther depending on the school. Good luck.

Hey
prodj88, I just wanted to give you a tip
I was deferred when i applied to carolina two years ago. I don't know if much has changed. But i wrote them a letter restating my interest for Carolina and also had my guidance counselor call to find out why i got deferred (since it was supposedly a shock)...Well anywayz, to make long story short I think that the phone call/letter helped because I found out earlier than other people that I got in. I found out a month after i was deferred. They just sent me an email telling me i got in! And some of my friends who got deferred didn't do anything and most were put on the waitlist.

Sounds like Carolina is trying to meet quotas for each county, so it's harder if you're from somewhere like Winston-Salem, Charlotte, etc. In my case, our county has one high school and 4 people who applied early (2 got in). What county are you from in NC? Seems that you're from a pretty big one because your stats look good to me.

I agree with the previous posts. Try writing to the admissions office, or if you happen to know an alumnus ask them for a recommendation.

Yeah I'm from Wake County...OK yeah Ladybug...I remember that they didn't take anyone from the waitlist because a large number of people enrolled <--- someone said it was due to UNC winning the ACC. Hopefully UNC will lose so that there's room for me lol.

UNC said there's no need for anymore rec's. Do you think writing a letter could possibly make them mad at me for trying to be sneaky?

Woops, I got deferred confused with waitlisted. Hey, which one is worse?

Proj88: I'm in Wake County too. What school? You can just send me a private message if you prefer.

Also, I don't know about the whole quota thing, honestly. It probably does exist, but not to the extent that people believe.

So far, 7 kids from my school have been accepted to Carolina, including myself, that I know of. And I know there are more, I'm just not friends with them. There really is no formula. Although Carolina's acceptance rate dropped from 32% last year to around 20% expected this year. It's getting really crazy.

It depends....if you get deferred you have a chance to get in RD, but if you get rejected RD it sucks. If you are waitlisted, you weren't rejected, but you might never come off the waitlist so you have to just sit and wait and hope there's room for you.
