My chances of getting into MIT and UMCP?

Hi guys and gals, I'm currently a junior in high school and I'm very stressed out right now because of admissions for college. So let's get to the point. My SAT score was VERY low, which lowered my self esteem. I got a 1210/2400. I usually have high grades in my classes, but the SAT proved differently. My cumulative GPA is a 4.06.

My Extra Currecultar Activities are:

IB Model United Nations; the Under Secretary General
National Honors Society
Intership for Lengo Camp, taught Mandarine Chinese to children from ages 2-10.
One of the 30 students that accepted into the University Of Maryland's Pre-College Scholars Program.
Worked as a counter person in a restaurant for 7 years. Started at age 10.
One of the people that set-up PGCPS' seminar for IB Model United Nations.
Self-taugh how to use computer language C++
Created a basic input, feedback type program. For example, The program had 3 layers. The first layer will ask what type of symptoms one has. The rest of the layer narrows it down to one disease. Very basic, since I learned how to program using C++ on my own and was really confused on how to make more layers of code.

Classes taken:
General Chemistry: 1 year
IB Chemistry: 2 years
IB Math Studies, which is a class about statistics, trigonometry, algebra 2, geometry, calculus and pre-calculus. We use the above to solve problems. For example, in order to solve 1 problem, we would have to use trig and cal to solve it, or Calculus and Geometry, etc. I took 1 year of it.
IB Math 2: 1 year
IB World Literature: 2 years
IB World History: 1 year
IB History Of the Americas: 1 year
Spanish: 2 years
IB Spanish: 2 Years
IB Visual Arts: 2 years
Physics: 1 year
Medical Science/ Anatomy & Physiology: 1 year
Theory Of Knowledge: 2 years

I'm still in my Junior year, but I filled in the years that I will be taking each of the classes in already. Since I'm in IB, I'm required to take those classes.
I will also be taking IB exams for the IB classes in my senior year. The scores will range from 1-7. I have not taken any, yet, except for IB Math Studies, I will receive my score next month. I'm sure I got a 5 or above.
I speak 3 languages, excluding Spanish. Which are: Mandarin Chinese, Fujin dialect and English. I speak fluently in all 3 languages.
My average for all of my classes from Freshment to Junior are all above a 90%, except for IB World History and World Literature, which are 84-86% average.

MIT? You need to set your sights lower. MIT has no shortage of 2300+ applicants.

Your GPA is a bit low and your SAT score is very low.

Also…the computer-oriented people who get into MIT (one of the most selective colleges in the nation) were doing this kind of thing when they were, like, fourteen. I just got into C++ this year and can program some things with it now, but I wouldn’t kid myself–I’d have no chance against people with tons of experience in that area. It’s not that significant of an achievement, I don’t think.

MIT seems highly unlikely, and it’s a reach for almost everyone. How have you done on practice SATs? It’s early enough that you have time to retake the SAT and get your score up to a range that can be competitive for UMCP.

I’m currently working on raising my SAT scores. For some odd reason, almost everyone that does well in class received a low SAT score. From 1200-1400 and those that slack off, got a score of 1500-1700. As for PSATs, I received a score equivalent to a 1210 on the SAT, so pretty accurate I guess.

bodangles I thank you for your honesty. I guess I should take my sights off of MIT. Seems way of out of my reach, I suppose.
Also, will be a first generation college bounded student raise my chances? Both my parents only got an education up to 5th grade.

Just practice the SAT over the summer and take it in October. The SAT uses a system that can be learned by almost anyone. That might not improve your chances much, but getting them to 2100+ after REALLY learning the system can put you in the running with passionate essays, ECs, and a good interview.

Thanks! I’ll definitely do that. I’ve already got a list of book to get to prepare for it. I think the main reason for my 1210 might be because I didn’t study for it.

You would probably need at least a 1000 point increase for them to even look at you. Even with a 2210 your SAT would be low for MIT. You need to start looking at less selective schools. Even if you didn’t study, you shouldn’t be getting 300 points below the average SAT score.

Well, MIT wasn’t really my first choice. There’s always a slight chance that I might get accepted, it’s one of those school that you just apply since only 10% of all applicants gets accepted. My first choice was actually University Of Maryland College Park.
As for the SAT, I ran out of time for most of the reasing section, so I had to guess maybe the last 5 questions. Let’s just say that my luck is just isn’t really good. But since then, I’m doing SAT practice tests and I got a feel of how much time I need to spend on each questions. I’ll take the SAT 2 more times, since I’ve heard that more than 3 times looks bad on one’s application. Is this true?

Try to take the ACT. The ACT tests the knowledge of one’s self while the SAT is just a bunch of tricks that can be learned using tutors and stuff like that. That’s just my take on it though.
