Want to get into Stony Brook? What do you guys thinks of my chances?

My overall GPA is 84.97.(Not including my GPA from this year)

Sat :1700

Reading:520
Writing:510

My GPA at the end of my junior year: 94.92
My GPA this year:95.80(second marking period first term)
3 APs(one last year and two this year) - US History, Macro Economics, and Comp Sci
3 clubs last year
I volunteered a lot during my sophomore and junior years
I also work after school every weekday.

So basically I was slacking a lot during my freshman and sophomore year and I got GPAs of 70s-80s and I failed a few courses…
I don’t think my GPA this year matters because my school sent my transcript to colleges around a month before I got my report card.(the 95.80)

Would I have a better chance to get into stony if I write a good essay about how I improved my grades significantly and what I learned from my failures??

Basically, the only thing I can do to improve my chances of getting into Stony is my essay because I’m a senior right now and I can’t really change the flaws of my past.
Any tips for my essay?

I’m also applying to Stony Brook as well with similar stats. My SAT is a bit lower and GPA is a bit higher. I know it’s a reach school for me and I think for you also but there’s a still a chance. Definitely put effort on the Ecs and the essay especially. Looks like you just started your essay so you should really work on it over winter break as the deadline is approaching. My advice for the essay is show what you bring Stony Brook or any other university and basically be yourself. If you want to talk about how you improved your grades you could but just make your essay as interesting as possible and try talk about your characteristics as a person. Good Luck and hope you get in.

Thank you. Good Luck to you too and I hope you get in as well.

It depends if you are in-state. In-state: Yes Outstate: Reach

In-state that’s why I want to go there. My family is poor and SUNYs are relatively cheap.
By yes, do you mean my chances are good or decent or low?
