So I found out my class rank is 25 out of 350 in a public hs. Is this good enough to get into elite colleges?

Try being ranked 3 or 4. Otherwise you AT LEAST need to be in the top 15

Of course it’d be better if you got it up, but I don’t think colleges focus on rank too much.

they do focus on rank… let’s say you were applying to a top college… now they know there’s 24 people with better grades than you in 1 school.

You’re fine. You’re top 10%, and most colleges don’t put a heavy weight on rank. UNC, for example, places almost no emphasis on it.

Is rank based on UW GPA or W because I could see it being skewed if the top 15 all took easy art classes? 25 isn’t ideal but it’s not too bad. You are still in the top 8%

my school only does weighted gpa but it is still easy for students to take easy classes and boost their gpa and rank

There are schools where having a 3.9995 can be a class rank of 50. So it does not seem like that could be the only consideration. Now, if you have a class rank of 25 and a GPA of 3.1 that would be a bit different.

I think they care more about the percentage (i.e Top 10%)

They care more about your percent. You do not need to be the top 3rd or 4th student in your class to be accepted into a top university.

They do not care about that.

thanks for all the feedback thus far.

You’re in the top 10%. Just chill.

Being in the top 10% isn’t enough guys, he said “elite colleges”, 10% will only get you into top state schools.

Are you serious?

depends on your race and extracurricular. also depends on how your school’s ranking system works. i can go into more detailed and real life examples from my school, but i think you get the idea. ranking isn’t everything.

^I agree, are you serious? top state schools? I think as long as you’re in the top 30%, I think you’re safe from state schools

And I don’t think Ivy Leagues would like that very much, you should try to focus on EC’s to compensate.

Here’s why you don’t need to be #1. I go to a school where a 4.7 weighted won’t even put you in the top 20. Just down the road, there are schools where if you have a 4.0 weighted you’d be #1. It depends on the school and you can’t compare ranks between schools effectively.

Thanks for all the insight guys. honors and ap courses get around a .3 gpa boost but since they are a lot harder than regular courses, the gpa’s of students tend to equal out.

What would having a 3.1 and such a high rank signify about the school?

it means that their school is very tough
