Congrats on UF! My oldest D went to UCF in Orlando. Florida is quite the draw for us Northeasterners! Also, you’ll find that you are going against the “traffic” when flying home from Florida. My oldest D was able to come home for Thanksgiving and Winter break, flights were inexpensive because while everyone in the northeast were travelling to Florida for Christmas, D was traveling north! Also, I was able to get cheap flights from Spirit for quickie weekends home during the school year. She’d fly home on Thursday night and return on Sunday night.
Hey man, great to see your successes! Congrats on avoiding a single rejection so far; not many people are ever able to say that. I’m probably going to UNC Wilmington next year, so we’ll both be Northeasterners in the South/Southeast
@TomSrOfBoston Big Update! I got into Northeastern University. WOOHOO!! Too bad they want my family to pay $62,000 per year lol. Great accomplishment, but not going.
Alumni Scholarship: $8,000 per year
Reduced Tuition: $20,591
Room and Board: Varies, but more than $10,000 and less than $12,000
Total: $30,000- $32,000 (Manageable with a loan)
Now that I have settled and stopped shaking, I’m pleased to share that I was accepted! It will likely be too expensive, but it’s still a great option to have and getting accepted is quite the honor. I’m actually surprised. I bought into the CC notion that my application would be laughed at because of the SAT score I got, but I got into Northwestern!
I’ve been accepted to all of my schools so far and I’m waiting for USC! If I could go 11/11, that would be great!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
:)))
And this proves that, contrary to what most students on the chance threads seem to believe, test scores aren’t the be-all/end-all.
Didn’t go 11/11. Got rejected by USC (which is strange because I got into a much more competitive school and ben interviewed) but that’s okay I got into some amazing schools and I’m really happy that I have closure with all my schools. I’m gonna have a tough decision to make. And to be honest, I think this rejection hurts much less because I got into Northwestern. At least I got into my super reach school.
I need advice right now. I am actually really torn. I didn’t let myself fall in love with Northwestern because I never saw myself getting in. Now that I am in, I’m beginning to love this school more and more. I want to be a journalist and they have a very strong, prestigious program. The University of Florida also has a strong program. Which one will give me more opportunities?
Based on a NPC, Northwestern will likely be about $4,000- $6,000 more than UF for my first two years and in my final two years, I will likely be full pay. BUT Northwestern also has a debt cap scholarship that doesn’t let undergrads graduate with more than $24,000. So basically, Northwestern will only be $24,000 more than UF for me.
I also like the fact that Northwestern is midiszed and has no general requirements for all freshman and allows me to start studying journalism as a freshman. UF is really big and has general ed courses you must take before you begin studying. They are also both really big on sports, which I love. It seems as though everything UF has, Northwestern has it and then some.
It also seems as though Northwestern really wants me to attend. They are offering to fly me out for free for Wildcat Days, even though I am a high income student. On the other hand, UF has ALSO offered me a $8,000 merit scholarship which will be $32,000 over all 4 years.
I am really torn right now and I just need advice lol. UF has been my dream since sophomore year, but now I’m falling more and more in love with NU. My mom also wants me to go to NU and that was where she has wanted me to go since I started the application process.
Can your parents pay the $4,000 difference? It sounds like a bargain to me and it does seem like a great fit for what you want. Of course if they can’t pay, they can’t, but it doesn’t sound like this is the case here.
DO take the “fly in” offer in any case.
If the costs are similar, which they are, go to Northwestern. Journalism is a dying profession, but a NU degree will be more helpful over your career than one from Florida, and that is coming from a UF grad.
