I’m assuming you accepted the USC offer and are deciding whether to accept the waitlist offer from UCLA. Is that correct?

I know folks hate when I ask this…but what is the cost differential? UCLA doesn’t give need based aid and very very little merit aid to OOS students…so your cost would be $65,000 a year…or so.

Did you receive any aid from USC?

I’m not exactly sure what you are asking. Presumably both of these colleges were places you would be happy to attend (otherwise…why apply?). Both are well regarded and fine universities. Both are located in L.A.

Note that the OP asks specifically about his decision in this topic: UCLA vs USC for economics.

You had to submit your SAT to UF, correct?

Yes I did, I forgot about that one…

Just curious since you write you want to be in IB and now I learn you are OOS to UCLA….why not NYU ?

On your other thread, you say UCLA and USC “will cost about the same”. Is that an affordable cost without parent loans?

For NYU I got in as a spring admit so I would have to start in January of 2023, which is something that I was not interested in doing.

You got into some very good schools ! Congrats! Did you come from a very selective HS in NY? What do you think made you stand out?

I went to a private high school that is not really that selective. My school is usually a feeder to Cornell, sending around 6 each year from a class of 60. However, this year only 1 got into Cornell. Other schools that many kids are accepted to include Fairfield, Union, Providence, St. Lawrence, and Clarkson.

One thing in particular that I think made me stand out was my family situation, and growing up with a sister that has autism, which is what I wrote about for my common app essay.
I also feel that I showed how I excelled in my sports from taking on a leadership role to volunteering to help coach others.
Lastly, I think this was a big factor that helped me get into many of these schools is that I had a lot of real world experience that tied in with my major.

What is your major?

business/econ major for pretty much all of the colleges.

This is a toughie - UCLA has really good business econ major and their campus I think is better, but the housing there as with other UCs could be an issue along the larger class sizes. I’d lean to UCLA on this, but I think you’ll be fine either place.

Thank you for this. As of now I am leaning towards UCLA, and will have to make a decision by 11:59 tonight.

UCLA now guarantees the housing for 4 years. I’d pick UCLA over USC too.
