My Dilemma

Hi,

I am in a big dilemma. I went to bunch of different schools in NY because of financial problems, etc.. and I haven't been to school for the past 2 years.

I am moving to Texas and I really really want to go to UT. However,
I am thinking of going to the CC in Austin for a semester and then applying for UT because Fall'09 admission deadline passed.

I am in bad financial situation and I have been supporting my parents and now I am slowly getting into better financial situation and thats why I am able to move now.

I went to a school in NY (SUNY) but I owe them $8k (i owed them about half of that and then they doubled it because i didnt pay on time) and i told them i would pay them in installments and they said it does not matter i have to pay off the entire balance before i can request transcripts or anything. i did decent there so its not the grades im afraid of.

what should i do regarding my application to UT? can i just omit it or something? because they will ask for transcripts and i wont be able to provide it.

i checked the national student clearinghouse thing and i do not think UT participates in it.

I really feel bad about doing this because not only will i omit my past but i will also lose a year worth of credit.

any advice? also the national student clearinghouse keeps 18 months of record i think.. but anyways i really appreciate the advice. i cant put off education any longer.

thanks so much

I can’t really help you with your other issues, but University of Texas at Austin accepts spring transfers.

yeah i am thinking of applying for the spring semester after 1 semester in acc

Sounds good, just do well the semester in CC.

thanks… but can anyone help me out with the main problem though? i am really worried about it

call the admissions department anonymously and ask them. don’t give details about yourself. something general such as, “i’m thinking of applying to transfer to your university but my previous school is withholding my transcript due to a financial problem.” etc, etc.

you don’t want to omit it if it’s going to be a big deal because it’s grounds for dismissal if they find out you lied on the application.

I suggest writing a very respectful letter to the director of financial aid and explain your entire situation. Ask if there is a way to at least have the fee reduced to the original amount before the late payment penalty. Is there an academic advisor you could speak with? Someone in the office of student affairs? What you need is an internal advocate. You are not the only one in financial trouble and surely they should realize your maturity in helping your family push beyond a crisis. If this does not work, get an unofficial transcript or printout from your online records. You could also ask each teacher to write out your grade on a post card and use these as evidence of your efforts and grade. Or maybe UT would allow an online email from the instructors. I guess what I’m saying is this: try to work within the system of both universities to achieve a good ending for yourself. As far as the clearinghouse–don’t risk falsifying an app. All schools ask for a listing of all colleges attended and you’re taking a huge chance and as you say–losing out on a year of credit. You are to be commended for helping where it was needed!

You have no choice but to pay off SUNY. This happens all the time and the second school won’t take you until the first is paid.

If you ever got a cent of financial aid or a student loan, you’re easily caught. Even if not, if you ever get caught UT could take away your degree. It’s also probably not worth loosing a year of credit over $8K.

Also, don’t you have to live in Texas for a year to get in state tuition at either a CC or UT? Move to Texas, work for a year to establish residency and pay off your debt.

I am in the same position as you are in regards to SUNY. Good thing it hasn’t stopped me from taking classes at a CC. You have to pay it all off. I am slowly doing it and will pay it all by the Winter, just in time to apply to various schools for the fall.
