My dream School is University of Michigan... Am I good enough?

I’m about to go into my senior year in high school, and it is my absolute dream to go to the University of Michigan for undergrad and eventually get an MBA after as well. However, I feel like I might not be good enough. My credentials are below:

GPA: Unweighted: 3.8 (4.0 my junior year)

SAT: 1450 (800 math and 650 Reading/Writing)

Extracurriculars: I will finish high school as a 3-year varsity cross country runner and a 4-year varsity basketball player

I’m a member of national honor society in my school and very possibly might be valedictorian at my school. So, I’m pretty much at the top of my class.

I only have one AP course and that is US History and the only other course that my high school provides for juniors is English language and I did not pass the test.

I also plan on taking both math SAT Subject tests because I believe I can get an 800 on them like I did with the SAT

SUBQUESTION: I was in ESL until I was 11 years old since both my parents were immigrants and this is often my reason for getting low test scores with anything reading/writing. I was wondering if that can be used not as an excuse but as a reason for my reading and writing scores being much lower than anything else.

Are you in-state?

Also, was your course schedule difficulty the hardest or close to the hardest amongst your peers?

Also, MBAs are usually earned after a few years of full-time work experience (and oftentimes are more valuable this way).

My course schedule was the hardest that my school provides and sadly no, I’m not in-state.

High Match, a1450 is good enough for UMich OOS. You can retake if you really think you should.

Should I still take loads of AP Courses and fill out my schedule senior year? Like would it increase my chances of admission?

For OOS and international applicants, Michigan is a reach, not just for the OP, but for any applicant. The admit rate for such applicants this year was under 20%. The mid 50% ACT range for incoming OOS freshmen was 30-34. The mid 50% range for admitted students was likely even higher (probably 31-35). The admit rate for OOS applicants will likely drop to approximately 15% for the class of 2018.

The last couple of years, I have seen many students from the UAE bound for universities like Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, Rice and the Ivies get flat our rejected by Michigan. Most Michigan-bound students are admitted into those universities as well.

@VANDEMORY1342

It is not a high match for the OP as an OOS student (unless OP is from a state which Michigan really needs more students from). It is a reach, although I would say probably worth applying to.

I’m sorry, but what does OP mean?

What should I do to improve my chances of getting admitted? Other than raising my sat score?

@timvasilyev7: Regarding Post #7, “OP” means “original poster”.

“What should I do to improve my chances of getting admitted? Other than raising my sat score?”

  1. Take the most challenging classes offered at your school
  2. Maintain a high GPA
  3. Write very strong essays, particularly the main Michigan supplement
  4. Make it clear that Michigan is your first choice

What SAT score should I aim for? Maybe 1500? And so far I plan to take AP Microeconomics, AP Statistics, AP Lit, and AP Lang, is that enough?

Can someone answer my most recent question^

you should aim for at least 75th percentile sat score which is like a 1530. yes, those ap classes are enough.

Honestly your SAT score is really high I don’t think you should stress over it too much. Hope you get in!!!

Your composite score is around admission average while your English section score is below 25th percentile (680). In addition, your GPA is also below admission average. I would suggest you to retake the test to bring your English section score to >700. UMich is a reach for you and your chance may be around or slightly below average OOS applicant.

i thought out of state admission was easier, though. oos tuition is higher so the university gets more money, which is why they want out of state applicants, right? or is that not how it works

@flutespell No. You are wrong. The admission rate from OOS is around half of in-state applicants as there are nearly 5 times more applicants from OOS and overseas.
