My ECs are Tech focused, but I now want to major in Econ/Finance,etc is that okay?

So I"m planning to major in Econ/Finance/other social sciences basically, but what I want to know is i was working within tech in the past doing ECs like Robotics, Programming, Research but I do also have ECs like Stuco, Quiz Bowl, and I have tons of leadership in Robotics… Can I still be applying in Econ/Finance/something similar or do I need to find ECs in those areas too.

You’re fine for admissions. Econ and Finance can be very math/programming oriented so a STEM background is great. You might want some Econ/business EC’s just be sure that’s what you want to do though.

No matter what you do EC-wise, someone will criticize it.

  • ECs concentrated in the area of your intended major => too one dimensional or unilateral.
  • ECs concentrated in a different area from your intended major => inconsistent with your application.
  • ECs varied => too scattered, does not tell a good story.
  • New EC started in senior year => looks like just a joiner, not enough time to show long term commitment or reach high levels of achievement.

@chmcnm
Any suggestions on econ/business ECs I can do in senior year. This is also important to see if I like it

Does your high school offer AP Economics or other business classes? Any business related clubs at your high school?

Do what you enjoy doing. That’s the litmus test for college and life. Tons of finance jobs awarded to STEM kids. Not just banking / consulting , corporate finance too. Look at the specs and reqs for most supply chain finance jobs (high demand and highly compensated). Most require or prefer an engineering background. You need to know how things work , how the design and manufacturing process works, how materials can influence production, etc. Fascinating field in a global economy.

@chmcnm @rickle1 No business related clubs. Only course is Economics SL or HL. I enjoy it, but from what i’ve heard college econ has a lot more math than what is presented in our classes (as those focus more on econ fundamentals of course), so people who take econ at my school and say “oh i want to do econ” usually find out they don’t in college.

Me myself I’m ‘okay’ at math. I take math HL at my school and have around a B grade, but if i work hard i can do well… although math doesn’t come to me instantly like it does to others. However, i do want to know if econ is still my sort of thing even if it must be pretty math based… because i do like social sciences like history and the social science of econ quite a bit. Computer science doesn’t have any of that and has way more math, which is “ok i guess” for me, but what keeps me going in CS is just hoping i can get better at math and I like tech so i try to keep it fun.

THis whole thing ties into my CS vs Econ dilemma discussion, if i could get some advice there it would be helpful: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-majors/2153206-econ-finance-etc-vs-computer-science-major.html#latest

No reason why you can’t do both (major / minor or double major). That’s actually a very powerful combo. Anecdotally, older brother was a Chem E / Econ double major many yrs ago. Today he runs businesses in the life sciences space and has had a fascinating career.

Likely depends on programs but there is a lot of high end math in college level econ today (multivariable stuff).

I might double major later in college, but right now I just want to apply in one field (and i dont think common app lets me write double major, nor does it improve my chances of getting into colleges by saying “I’d be fine by both just take me”)
