I am an electrical engineering major let me know what you think of these grades.
I have currently just finished my sophomore year.

Engineering Graphics---> B
Engineering Analysis (with 3 hr lab)---> B-
Statics---> B
Electrical Engineering I---> A-
Welding (with 3 hr lab)--->B+
Ship Systems II----> B+
Differential Equations-----> C

Current term: 16 credits 2.895 GPA
Total: 75 credits 2.873 GPA

I would want to have my GPA up above that 3.0 mark to be honest. Maybe next semester you can drop your load a bit and focus more on getting higher marks?

well right now i’m registered for 20 credits worth of classes next semester

There is no reason to take 20 credits in a semester. You have just 53 credits left (I am assuming that to total required is 128 nowadays), so that is just a little over 13 credits average a semester. Just like Chucktown suggested, I would reduce the course load and focus on getting better grades.

Take it from me…not having 3.0+ GPA can affect some things including at least the TIMING of grad school. Although I was able to attend and finish grad school, I had to acquire work experience first and it pretty much knocked me out of attending a Top-10 grad school.

Well I go to a unique college and the average credit per semester is at least 16 credits and that’s if your lucky.

I just looked at your curriculum (SUNYMaritime) and I see that every semester is between 16-19. If that is what you have to do and there is no way to extend a semester, then I guess there is no way around it. Regardless, do what you can to get to that 3.0 mark. Even if you have a 2.999999999, when you are asked your GPA, their first impression is 2, no matter the points following it.

The diff eq grade worries me a bit. Math and major course should be solid B’s or higher as an engineer.

Overall, try and set a GPA for > 3.0

DiffEq is the one math class that’s ever really truly stumped me before (though I did eventually learn to appreciate how useful it is, so it’s all good), so I can see why you’d get a bad grade in it.
Still, you need to get up to a 3.0 GPA. I can see your Cumulative before this semester was lower, so it’s a slight improvement. But just push it a little bit higher and you’ll be much better off.

thanks for all the replies
yes i know the C in diff equ’s is not good but just so everyone knows i deserve a lot better in that class because i worked very hard and did well all semester but my professor decided to be a jerk and make the final very unfair. When your taking the kind of classes I was taking after 3 days of very tough finals, going into the diff equ’s final it was pretty simple that i was just not ready and too shot for the final exam i did my best though and i understand the concepts very well

There is a good chance that you have an above average GPA for your school.

Those are really good grades for the workload you took on. But looking at you’re overall gpa, you need to cut back on the number of credits you take to get more A’s and get above the 3.0 level. Once you’re over that you can go back to the super load if you want because you seem to maintain it really well.
