My Friend in need of realistic chances

well, i have a friends who is a comp sci major, with a 2.2 transfer gpa (could probably boost to 2.7ish by transfer time) realistically, where can he go? which csus are easiest for this major?

thanks.

Which college is he a presently? If he is at a CCC, a 2.2 at the time of sending in the transfer app probably will only get him a spot at his local CSU (the one his CCC feeds into, usually the closest one). However, at a 2.2, I would have him check what the minimum is required at his local CSU.

For non-local CCC to CSU transfers, frankly, I think he will be rejected at any competitive CSU (SJSU, Fullerton, SFSU, Chico, Cal Poly, etc.) and will still be hard pressed to get into less competitive CSUs. With that said, I’d advise him to pick at least 5 CSUs at application time including his local.

I don’t think there is any such thing as an “easy” comp sci at a CSU. Math is math, programming is programming, and the content and expectations in these classes do not swing so widely – it is not as if these are subjective driven classes. I would suggest that your friend assume the CSUs (that will admit him) are all going to be in the same ballpark in terms of difficulty of classes and pick his CSU based on other criteria that will support him in finishing his degree.

well hes at pcc (pasadena city college) that makes his local csu csula? thanks for the info! how does a 2.5-2.7 gpa place in competitiveness for csus? sorry, clueless on this as i am a uc transfer. thanks again.

I did a 5 minute websearch on “CSULA” “impaction” “transfer” and what I see so far is that at CSULA the comp sci is not yet an impacted major. Since Pasadena is a “local” CC where your friend took the majority of his credits, chances are he should get admitted if he is over a 2.0 – however, this is as space permits. Basically CSULA will fill spots in the comp sci program until full with the local transfers by GPA rank. As long as spots are still there once they reach his GPA mark, he will get in.

He will have a much tougher time getting in to a non-local CSU… so he should definitely get familiar with the LA campus as it is his best shot.

Good luck.

Great news! thanks alot, youve been of great help!
