There is a student in my grade level who I have recently gotten to know better. He is intelligent and often picks up on things quicker than I do. However, most of this potential is wasted because he does not do homework, sometimes not even classwork. It’s taking a toll on his GPA and obviously he can’t keep this up or he’ll just get more and more behind. Is there anything I can do to help him? How should I motivate him? Thanks.
I guess I’ll give a bit more information. I’ve tried to give him tutoring sessions. He responds well them to them, so the problem is not that he can’t do the work, it’s that he doesn’t want to. If he is under constant vigilance he will do it, but if he is at home, nothing gets done.
Let him fail? Nothing like a plunging GPA to kick someone’s butt into gear. He has to want it.
That is most certainly true, but will it be too late to salvage his GPA by then? When it has plunged before he has been okay with raising it to something mediocre (barely passing). I guess his biggest problem is being motivated to push past that mediocrity. How can I help him do that? Or should I even involve myself?
@foopyblue2 Yes. You are his friend. I would suggest giving him a reality check about how his procrastination will ultimately affect his chances for a good college. Not only is this procrastination going to affect him on this level, but also after he finishes college and enters the real world. He has to understand that you have to do things in life to be successful.
