My Friend Is Worried About Getting His Acceptance Rescinded

Hello! So one of my friends recently committed to Cornell, and he’s really freaking out about something. He really didn’t want me to tell anyone, but I feel like he’s overreacting to the problem at hand and I thought perhaps some Cornellians could give me some information about what he’s so hung up about. Basically, he cheated in his sophomore year of high school–he copied off of homework a lot and sometimes on quizzes–and some people started to get annoyed with him. He told me he did it for only this one year and hasn’t done it ever since. He thinks that because he got into Cornell, some of his classmates will feel jealous and email the Cornell admissions office and tell them about what he did, and he seems really worried that he’ll get his admissions rescinded as a result of this. What do you guys think? Do you think that could happen? Thanks for your input in advance!

I highly doubt Cornell admissions would rescind an acceptance due to that.

I also suspect that every year, Ivy League schools get quite a few emails from people in high school trying to sabotage accepted students.

Did your friend get any disciplinary action from his school for cheating? If he did, did he or his college counselor report it on college app? If not so, he could possibly get his acceptance rescinded. However, I think the chances are low.

Pretty sure they would just ignore emails like that, I highly doubt they have time to spend on those kinds of emails

They wouldn’t rescind admission at all. They can’t be sure which of those emails are legitimate or not, and they definitely won’t spend the time to find out if it is (I mean, how would they?).

I wouldn’t sweat it. The chances are EXTREMELY low, unless the SCHOOL emails the university about it with an official discipline notice, then no, they wont revoke his admission. Congrats to him for getting accepted!

There have been students who were rescinded for not reporting school disciplinary matters or criminal violations. It sounds from your post like he wasn’t caught and there wasn’t anything to report. In that case, hopefully he will learn from this and turn over a new leaf in college.

Tell him he’s being paranoid nothing will happen
