He's an international applicant. Submitted his app in early Feb or late Jan from what I can gather.

Any suggestions what he should do?

He doesnt have any MIT ID or an account on MyMIT so he can't track anything. His school reports/references etc. were all sent in December itself, but WITHOUT part 1!

I've tried hard convincing him to give the MIT admission office a call, but he just wouldn't. He says he'll fax a copy of his entire app tomorrow. Is that a dumb thing to do?

I forgot to add, everything was sent airmail (not even speed post)

Why didn't he apply by the deadline? Seems like if he was motivated enough to get everything else in, he would have done so.

It's gonna be too late at this point, unfortunately.

Hey thanks ben for answering!

Actually I don't know why he took such a long time when he had the app with him in August. I guess he just freaked out and wanted to give it his best (we've both wanted to go to MIT since 8th grade and all that crap....) :D

I'll relay your message. Thanks again!

Any fellow applicants'? Any perspective? :)

i dunno man, being able to finish by the deadline is part of giving it his best, isn't it?

i wish your friend the best of luck, but as ben said...it's most likely too late now. =(

oh...you sound like you're actually happy that your "friend" is out of the competition with you...
dont compete so hard that you lose the friendship.
and if im misinterpreting your message, please do excuse me.

No actually i'm trying to make it light-hearted rather than as tense as he is right now. His app is probably there, he just wouldn't call for his ID. Competition is out of question, as I'd give my place for him, honestly. You know how these are - mad scientists - they're not as good at practical stuff as they are with theory.

=) gotcha. sorry for the previous note.
good luck with everything!
and your friend probably has a type b personality...just let him do his thing ;)
he'll figure it out eventually.

Yes that phrase is how I'd describe him. He had wanted to go to MIT so dearly but almost gave it up (lots of problems I wouldnt describe here). But when he actually had the app in his hands and it was time to complete it, he probably froze or his mind went blank or whatever - "Man this is it - I'm applying to MIT!"

You know what I mean.... that's the only plausible reason I can think of.

As a parent of three teenagers I can understand how something like this could happen. The whole application process is overwhelming and even the best students can freeze up when it comes time to fill out the application. The number of essays required by each app these days is incredible. My S took two months to complete his first application.

I feel sorry for your friend. He probably hasnt gotten a lot of support form his parents or school. However, if he couldnt handle the stress of the application process, a school like MIT may not be the best place for him.

Thanks cookiemom. He did not apply to a whole lot of schools actually. "Support from school and parents" - surely you must be kidding. Notice I said "...but almost gave it up (lots of problems I wouldnt describe here)...." Both of us are out of school (graduated last year), and were actually facing stiff opposition to applying to MIT and other schools, let alone support. We were literally on our own. Had it not been for the internet and College confidential, I couldn't picture him and me even applying in the first place.Sad but true.

Now for updates - he called me today and said he just sent another copy of his whole app by speed post. Speed post takes 3-4 days to reach the US. It was an act of desperation, I know, but I think he's gone mad in not calling the Admission Office (I've said, scolded, urges, persuaded, but he just won't - he's so scared).

Is there any chance I could call on his behalf and get the MIT ID? Will the adm.office hand out someone else's ID?

probably not, confidentiality reasons. also, if the app got there well after the deadline [with a late postmark, of course], mit may not even have given him an id number...
