My friend wants to appeal to SD (its not for me, i already got in for fall in Marshall). His grandma who lives with him died last year a month before his SAT's and he lost focus for a few weeks because she was someone very close to him and his family. At the time of applications, he decided not to write about it (although he should have since he would have gotten 500 points and turns out he was only short 250 points of an acceptance). He called SD admissions and the lady said he had a valid claim in saying his gma's death affected his studies for the standardized tests.

He has a 3.95 w and a 2030 with decent sat 2 scores in both. Can anyone from SD tell me the going appeal rate and if his solid app coupled with the his gma's death (death certificate sent w/ appeal) be able to overturn sd's decision?

flong i believe i read the appeal rate is between 5-7%. i mean... if the admissions lady said he had a very valid claim.. he should definitely go for it. plus, he would look very serious about it if he has the death certificate in with his appeal and such. his stats are pretty good and 250 pts is not a lot at all. good luck to your friend!

i'm 90 points away from the cutoff rate myself. i failed to mention that my dad was laid off and our family was separated (him in hong kong, us in california) for quite some time, so we were shuttling back and forth. also, a friend committed suicide & i received one new award senior year. do you think i have a case here?
PS --do you know how many points i can get for my dad being laid off?
