Apealing

My friend got rejected to UCSD and I got accepted. I had 3.565 gpa with 1790 Sat scores. She on the other hand had 3.74 gpa with 1760 SAT scores. I did however, have lower income, first generation colelge student and a single parent so this gave me extra points which she obviously lacked. However, she did not mention anywhere in her essay about the divorce her mother and fatehr was going through and the death of her grandfather during her junior year, which greatly affected her SAT scores and GPA. She didn't come to school for a few days in a row cause of these circumstances which is why I think she didn't get accepted (due to her low GPA/SAT scores). So, will it be possible to appeal by letting UCSD know about the hardship she did go through during her junior year or is that impossible?

I heard one has to write a letter to explain why he/she deserves to be accepted & such... I'm not sure though. Did she check the UCSD website? There should be some guidances on how to appeal. I have a few friends doing that being UCSD their 1st choice...

of course it's possible...just know the chance of her actually being accepted is really low

well you don't know if you don't try ;)
wish your friend the best :)

Have your friend call the office and see what her final point total was. If the discrepancy between the cut off and her point total was big, then it might not be enough to get her in. If it's in the ball park of the 7421 cut off, you might consider.

Oh and i forgot to mention that, we calculated her points on the site that was given on these forums and if we did do them correctly, she recieved around 7500 points. So I was hoping that since she is already on the border that maybe her actually mentioning what she had to go thrtough will push her over the edge and have UCSD rethink their decision.

I'd still think that calling the office to know their point total and how much she missed it by would be better. They might calibrate how to calculate it somewhat differently, which would lead her to a lower point total.

forgot to thank you all for your quick responses

if she is close, i do think she stands a strong chance though, because they give up to 500 points for life altering circumstances, and 250 for less serious ones...

the cutoff for this year was like 7535 or somethin

I had a friend who did that. I think there was one teacher recommendation included and definitely DO NOT mention that someone with a lower gpa/ SAT scores got in.

well my friend called UCSD and found her actual points were around 7100-7200 so that is pretty far off from the cutoff, which was around 7500. however, since a death that she had to deal with, along with a single mother (her dad being absent for a few years) would that be enough points to have her appeal?
