I applied to a couple schools but I'm thinking I need a couple safety schools. I want to live in the east coast, somewhere in PA or NY.

UC Riverside
UC Santa Barbara
UC Berkeley
UC Davis
New York University
Fordham University
Syracuse University
Boston University

I'm needing to finish up my last ones and so far:
Michigan State
SUNY New Paltz
SUNY Stony Brook
Marist
UMichigan

I was going to do CUNY but I heard it's not the college life you want, are there any other SUNY's, good schools in New York I should look into good shot for my stats and major?

My planned major is journalism which is why I'm doing New Paltz and Stony Brook, alternate being film and media studies. What do you guys think?

Just make sure you’ve spent adequate time in New York…city life+college is a really different experience than college life out of new york-- and I’ve heard of many people that are disillusioned by what they thought their experience would be like.

Why do you have a bunch of one year stints in sports? Of course it looks good that you are involved but it also spends a negative image since it’s “one and done”.

Also, I think you need to get your test scores up. You have solid EC’s though.

Good luck with admissions.

You will get into some of these schools although you have several unrealistic reaches. Your big issue is whether you can afford them and the travel back and forth. None of these schools meet need and you’re unlikely to get scholarships.

*None of these schools meet need and you’re unlikely to get scholarships. *

Exactly.

How much will your parents spend each year on your education? If you’ll need financial aid, then those out-of-state publics won’t work, NYU is AWFUL with aid, and the privates don’t meet need, either.

If money is “no object” then great!

But, if finances are an issue, you’ll likely end up at a UC. I’m concerned that you might only get accepted to UCR.

I prefer CUNY over SUNY.

It’s true that SUNYs has better academics reputation but there are several things I do not like about them such as location and community (ex. asians stay with asians). I think they are some CUNY that you could have good college life. Most of them are commuter school but I would say you might get something from CCNY since there is dorm (that is more avaliable than that of Hunter).

My heart also set in NY(C) but I also have to be realistic. I know that I can’t afford NYU, or Syracuse so I don’t bother apply them. I do apply to Fordham though and got accepted, but get no scholarship coz I’m int’l so I turn it down. If you are different, meaning you can afford those $50,000 tuition fees, that’s great. If you don’t, carefully look into schools and find one that would likely to give you scholarships/aids.

If you still want to apply to SUNYs (and don’t care about those negative things I’ve said), I would say Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook, and Genesso. If you wanna go to others SUNYs, then better choose CUNYs.

I went to Syracuse and then transferred to NYU, so I could help you out if you want info on either of those…and my son transferred to SUNY New Paltz. I would steer clear of the CUNY’s, only heard negative things. NYU is great if you don’t want a campus school and love city living. New Paltz has a nice community close knit type feeling and a funky college town with lots of outdoor activities in the nearby mountains. The student body tends to be friendly and down to earth. If you have any questions I can help you with, feel free to ask here or PM.

I hope that **Typhloshaun **comes back and says what his financial situation is.

None of his out-of-state schools are do-able if his family can’t pay for them. His stats are not high enough for good merit and his stats won’t inspire a school to be generous with financial aid. :(

I’d hate to see him wasting time and application fees for unaffordable schools.

However, if money is no problem, then :)

If your heart is in NYC, why are you applying to Syracuse, which is 6 hours away? Or Boston? You really need to visit some of these schools because they are all very different from one another.

re CUNY vs. SUNY: Overall the CUNY’s are equivalent academically to the SUNY’s but the experience is very different. My younger daughter is at CUNY Brooklyn and now regrets not living on a regular campus in the dorms (not an option at Brooklyn) and is looking to transfer.

Stony Brook is not NYC at all.

Living in dorms, in any NYC (or any) school should help the “social aspect”.

I will probably go in debt going into college, I’m fine with that. I’m going to try and raise as much money as possible before college.

Right now I’m just scared I won’t get into a good out of state (I can’t live here anymore) because of my stats. I’ve only applied to Boston, Fordham, NYU, Syracuse through common app so far and I’m afraid from what I’ve heard those are low reaches. Thanks for the input!

You might want to look at Drew, a good small school right outside NYC, or Fairleigh Dickinson, Adelphi and Hoftstra where you would have a good shot at Merit aid

Do you have someone who has agreed to co-sign big loans for you for 4 straight years?

By yourself, you cannot borrow large amounts of money.

How much do you plan on borrowing?

You have great EC’s and 6 AP classes. Your SATs are not the best for these schools.

I wish we know about this sooner, we could have helped you with some alternative schools, like Loyola Maryland, Le Moyne College. Check LeMoyne and see if they are rolling admissions. Its a very good Jesuit college in upstate New York. Also look at Canisius.

Will Fordham and Syracuse take you? I don’t know. They might waitlist you. But you have other factors they are interested in: being Filipino, being from California, having all kinds of community service.

They might take a chance on you. I disagree with mom that their financial aid stinks. While its true that you dont have stats and scores for them to really entice you, I think your aid package may not be so bad, if you do get in.

Good luck.

Also look at Saint Louis University. They are rolling admissions. Get on it now.

Thank you so much ghostbuster and everyone else. Wish you all luck with your/your kids’ applications.

My parents don’t know anything about the college process, and you guys have been a blessing. <3

When you ask for chances, give people your UW gpa and Weighted if applicable. Don’t give the UC gpa. UW plus your courseload will give a better idea. UC weights it differently from everyone else. UC is also the hardest schools in the country as to requirements.

Deadlines aren’t over yet?

Check “Colleges that Change” Lives website.

My kid enjoyed the ‘away’ experience on the East Coast.

Out of state SUNY tuition is still a bargain at about $13,000.

The SUNY schools reasonably close to the city are Purchase, Old Westbury, Maritime, Farmingdale, Stony Brook and New Paltz. The others are more than a few hours drive away.

My pleasure. Hope it works out for you. Fordham is awesome but its a tough school.

The SUNY schools reasonably close to the city are Purchase, Old Westbury, Maritime, Farmingdale, Stony Brook and New Paltz. The others are more than a few hours drive away.*

The tuition may be a bargain, but according to New Paltz site, when you add the fees, housing, and meals…the total exceeds $23k per year PLUS travel costs (which would be at least $1200 more per year).

For a student who’d likely only get Pell, Stafford loan, and maybe a bit more aid, $23k wouldn’t likely be do-able. He’d be at least $13k short every year.

BTW…I think Fordham is great, too. But, I have their Viewbook that they send to future students, and their aid isn’t that great…lots of loans for parents and students. If your parents aren’t willing/able to do a Parent Plus loan every year, you’ll have a big gap in aid.
