My junior son . NJ universities.

My Son is looking to go into English Education while minoring in Italian and Spanish. He is looking into TCNJ, Montclair State University, Rutgers New Brunswick and William Paterson. He has a 3.45 GPA as a Junior. Does he have a shot at these schools ? Are they good options for what he wants to pursue ? Are they reputable overall ?

I’d rank them TCNJ,then Rutgers…Montclair would be a safety among those you mention…and pass on Willy Pat

Just a word of caution: the state of New Jersey requires a double major in Education and another classroom subject (i.e. English and Education, not “English Education.”) Many students cannot fit a minor into four years along with what is essentially a double major. Your son should check to be sure that he will have time to minor in two romance languages along with two majors (English and Education). It sounds overly ambitious to me in light of licensure requirements for teachers in NJ and all the field work they have to do. Is he willing to go to school for 6 years?

Rutgers has an excellent English program, better than any other in NJ except Princeton.

It is a serious error to believe that TCNJ is a better institution than Rutgers, which is one of the country’s major research universities. Rutgers is also strong in the humanities and social sciences.

MSU and William Paterson are both known for their teaching programs, however most of the students are commuters. If your son plans to staying on campus he really needs to look into the on campus environment.

I disagree wholeheartedly…TCNJ is much better then Rutgers, and more selective…and william paterson is a very weak school, graduation rates are abyssmal…

TCNJ is very good but it is much different than Rutgers. There are more high stat kids at Rutgers, by far. This is largely due to their size and world class depts/programs. On the other hand, there are many more lower stat kids at Rutgers too. Again, largely due to size. It is a matter of fit. I put them on equal footing if TCNJ offers what you’re looking for and you don’t mind the small school. As an option to these two, consider Ramapo well before Montclair and Wm Paterson.

^^^well said^^^…and i agree Ramapo before the other two schools…having lived in a top NJ school district, very few students attend Rutgers, and a good number who stay in state, choose TCNJ…

Another option to consider, would be to pursue an undergrad. degree in the areas of interest, and follow that up with a one year M.A.T. program. Check with the universities in question and see how easy it would be to do that.

For studying education, TCNJ is clearly the best choice, with its origins as a teacher’s college. However, it could be a reach with a 3.45 GPA. What are the SAT scores? and class rank?

Rutgers and Montclair St. are also solid choices. William Patterson has a TERRIBLE graduation rate. I would look elsewhere for a safety - Rowan, Richard Stockton.
