My Mom Thinks My Course Schedule is Too Difficult. Is She Correct?

I will be attending a small state university in my hometown. I'm hoping to transfer to Mizzou after the first year.

My mom doesn't think that I will be able to handle 16 credit hours. Is this a manageable schedule? I don't think it will be a problem. I took more challenging classes my senior year.

Intro to Biology (environmental emphasis)
The Arab World
College Algebra
Comparative Religion
Intro to Business Careers (1 credit hour)
U.S. History

I also took 16 credit hours and it is a good number to stay on track to graduate. Schedule seems managable, I would try to steer clear of taking classes in the same subject. You didnt say what your major is but for your electives make sure to take classes you are interested in, it will make the class way less stressful.

Looks manageable to me. Six classes may make you feel a bit busy at times, but since one is a one credit and the rest don’t sound too challenging, I think you should be able to handle it. If you get a chance to look at their syllabi ahead of time, you should be able to see how much work each class expects of you–if it sounds like too much, you could always drop one.

The number of credit hours, in my experience, doesn’t really shed much light on the amount of work you have to do. I had a two credit class last semester that was more work than some four credit classes I’ve taken. It really just depends on the class itself and the professor. The number of credits can be misleading. So I would definitely look as far into the actual course requirements and professors as possible.

that’s a lot of classes you physically have to go to, but that’s the only caveat, i guess, if you think you’re academically prepared for all of your classes.

Since you’re thinking of transferring, try to take classes that are “mainstream” and will transfer easily. Biology, Algebra and History seem to fit that category, not sure about the others.

That doesn’t look bad really. It’s 6 classes…but it’s not as if you’re taking 6 extremely challenging classes.

What is the Intro to Business Careers class? Is that even a full semester class, or is it just a 3-4 week course or something? If it’s only 1 credit hour…it can’t be anything too complicated.

If its your goal is to graduate in four years then it the type of course load that you must take.

Agree with stradmom about transferring. Look at the Mizzou website for course equivalency to make sure all classes will transfer and in the category you want them to be in. Some of my D’s CC classes only transferred as electives and not in the category we expected.
If we had known to look at the equivalencies beforehand, she would have chosen different CC classes so as not to waste time and money.

Looks like an easy semester as long as you’re not lazy.

That course load doesn’t look difficult, especially since they are all freshman/beginner courses. If they were higher-level, yes, I’d be weary. But you’ll be fine.

That looks like a fairly easy schedule to me, which is good for first semester freshman year. I’m assuming that the 1 credit course is just a survey of available careers in business, where they have speakers come in and let you know what majors are available in business and what careers they could lead to. There’s a course like that at my D’s school and it’s an easy A if you show up for class and complete the simple assignments that are given. If it’s something much tougher than that, you might want to rethink having a 6th course your first semester.
