My Odds?

When I was younger I was a UT fanatic like most other kids I knew growing up. Then as I got older, I realized how hard it was to get into UT and sort of stopped hoping I could go there (and just lost interest), but now I'm exploring my options and wondering if I have a chance to go there.

As of now-

In-state
3.6 GPA
I am in second quarter (this is what will hurt me) I'm not sure where but I'd say somewhere around 30-35% but If I make all A's next semester (which I plan on doing) I can get to ~26-27%
1220 SAT
EC's- V. football 3 yrs, baseball for 2, ~50 service hours

I don't know what else to put, but I would be applying to Liberal Arts unless there is something easier to get into

Not much of a chance, unless you manage to get into top 10%.

I would take the SAT again and try to bring your scores up a lot. It might make some difference, although I don't know how much.

Does everyone get the CAP option, so that they can go somewhere else first and then transfer into UT if that is where they really want to go?

^yea if you're instate, then you're automatically in CAP.

But yea, I'd raise the test scores--probably around the upper 1350's. Try the ACT, also.

1400+ SAT or no shot. Unless you get your rank within the top 20%, in which case I'd say 1300+.

1250 or so is average for accepted students, but this includes top ten kids. It's harder for those outside the top ten, and the lower your rank the higher SAT you need to offset it.

What kind of ACT score should I be attempting to get (?) I got a 25 but I assumed it wasn't high enough

A 1400 is about the same as a 32 or 33.

UT now looks at your whole score, which means they will look at your writing score starting for applicants for Fall '09 admissions.
So I'd say around a 2050-ish with your rank now would suffice. Maybe only a 2000 if you get in top 25%.

holy hell.. Well I'm still going to work my butt of next year, and retake my tests. Hopefully a bunch of people will catch senioritis which will put me into top 25%.

There were some people I didnt expect to get in that are going to UT this fall, I'm going to see what their "stats" were

What you may also work on that is in your control is getting some kick ass EC's. While not as huge a factor at UT than at other small LACs and other selective colleges they can still make your application stand out.

i was 19% and my SAT was a 1340. got capped... probably because the only thing i did was football and work. they mainly consider grades... a friend got in who was just outside the top 10% with an 1150 on the SAT, he was also from sweden.

Hate to tell you this, but it really does not matter very much what your ECs are at all. I do not know anyone who is denied admission because of ECs if they had high enough SATs and rank. And I do not know of anyone who had great ECs who got in with lower SATs and rank.

The academic side is what matters most. Those admissions essays also matter a lot...almost exactly as much as the ECs. Yes, those essays that most kids spend 30 min on matter almost as much as 4 years of ECs.

It sucks for a lot of people but that's the way it is...
