My options for 08-09

(Grejuni suggested a new thread :))

Right now, I have a few schools in mind. I'd like to have other options though, in case I end up disliking them or they don't work out. Are there any schools out there that actually have spaces left and have rolling admissions?

I like visual and fine arts and i'm very strong in reading and writing. The only class I struggle in really is math, and i'm done with that class in most schools this year. I'm open to anything right now, haha...

I live in Michigan, if that makes a difference.

Interlochen is an arts conservatory in Michigan.

I thought Interlochen was incredibly difficult to get into? I considered it when I was looking at boarding schools after my freshman year.

Cranbrook is a really good school and it's in Michigan. What part of Michigan do you live in?

Ha, I actually live incredibly close to Cranbrook. I would have to be a day student. I'm considering going there if they have a summer art program though.

I would like a boarding school though right now. It just needs rolling admissions and would actually want to take me...

Peddie in NJ has rolling admissions. There's also Lake Forest Academy near Chicago and Western Reserve outside of Cleveland if you want to stay close to home. There's a few boarding schools in the Toronto area (the majority are single sex, if not all) if you're interested in that, and it's only a three or four hour drive.

I'm looking at all of these, thanks. I really like Lake Forest right now too.

Conserve is located in Wisconsin and has rolling admissions, good matriculation to top schools and may still have FA available if you need it.

Thank you. :)

My big problem right now is that on paper, I look like an uninterested, unmotivated student. It's been really hard for me to pursue interests because my dad has been sick and I honestly am a bit behind right now. Would they take in consideration a call to the admissions office, discussing this? I have a ton of interests and i'm a good student...it's just not showing.

Bump for more ideas? Lake Forest seems to be pretty full right now, Western Reserve also has a waiting list (but I had a really great conversation with an admissions officer and i'm going to apply still), and Interlochen/Winchendon/Conserve need to be called another day.

Go to SSAT online and you can select to see schools that still have openings. Wait until a potential in-person interview to discuss your performance, energy, or motivation!

The SSAT list isn't up yet apparently. It says it will be available in May though, so i'll check back.

Would it be somewhat inappropriate to send in pictures of artwork or something with my teacher recommendation, if I wanted to show I have something extra? The schools I talked to for a while seemed impressed with all my extracurriculars, but I want to show that I have something i'm passionate about.

Christi
Did any of the schools suggest that you send extra materials on the application? Two schools my D applied to said that you could send extra stuff. One said NOT to send anything!

I imagine lots of schools would want to see your artwork. I know photographing it can be tricky, though.

Good luck, I admire your determination!

I was going to call back tomorrow, it was one question i completely forgot to ask though. :(

Yeah, it can be, depending on what it is. I've found that good lighting and no flash can help though.

Thanks! I know i'm asking a ton of questions, but my parents aren't helping at all and i'm a bit lost. It's really helpful.

Christi, are your parents supportive of you attending boarding school?

I don't know what my parents think anymore. They approached me about 3 months ago saying that homeschooling was no longer an option for me and I was being sent back to a school. I was okay with this...I had been looking into going back anyways. No one was doing anything, so I started researching. I called at least 15 schools, tried to set up tours and open house attendance...and still, nothing. I found out that they put me into a lottery for ONE school, with a 500 person waiting list/lottery and limited spaces in each grade level. Of course, I didn't get in. I have been fighting with them on and off for the past few weeks, and told them i'm going to start looking for a boarding school because I need a better environment. My dad told me fine...but he's not going to help me look. So here I am now.

Of course, there's a ton of backstory to all of this and I just wrote wayyy too much. It's something I considered a while ago, and something I know I need now. Maybe he'll help me look sometime, but in a day or two he'll be completely apathetic again.
