My parents are not letting me go to college

So I am currently 16 years of age but I finished high school when I was 15. It’s been almost a year since I completed high school. Every day is a constant battle with my parents because they are not letting me go to the local college. I am basically now just waiting until I can get my life started. I have 50,000 dollars in my bank account and they won’t tell me why they will not let me go to college. What can I do to get out of my parents custody so I can go to college and I really dont want to wait until I turn 18.

What do they want you to do instead?

If you can spell it, you can do it

I’m not sure there’s much you can do except try to convince your parents to change their mind. Theoretically, you could try to get legally emancipated, but you would need to hire a lawyer, and convince a judge you could be financially self-sufficient and have the maturity to live alone. You might irreparably damage relations with your parents, even assuming you could clear all the nearly impossible hurdles listed above.

We need to know their reason “why” you can’t go? Is it a local college or sleepaway? Why did they let you graduate early?

Any reason you could not go to community college?

Can you sit down with your parents and try to all agree on a short and long term plan?

Another new poster with an odd and incomplete tale. You’re 16 and out of hs, do you have a job, are you doing something productive?

Maybe they’re waiting for you to learn how to spell ‘college’?

Sometimes you need to obey them, because they just want a better for you.

Jeez you guys are ruthless, it’s a typo and you can’t edit after 15 min.

OP until you’re 18 the only options you really have are to work with your parents or to get emancipated if it’s really bad. But 16 yr olds don’t really belong at college IMO, maybe they don’t think you’re old enough to go?

^ I mean, they use it four times. That’s not a typo, that’s not knowing the spelling they’re using isn’t correct.

Calling it out ceased to be funny after about 0.2 seconds though. Just overkill at this point.

Oh wait you’re right - I’m so used to reading “collEge” on this website I didn’t even notice it until the last one.

Agree on the ruthless part. Gosh, maybe OP was on mobile and autocorrrect happened? But, either way…we need some more details before we can really help you. First, I’m just curious, but I want to know if you skipped a grade or how you managed to graduate so early? What did you take in highschool as well? What are you interested in?
What have you been doing now that you are out of school?

Methinks a high school somewhere got a snow day.

Let’s say that you are a typical 16 year old. They may not think you are mature enough or may get taken advantage of or you might take advantage of freedoms.
So what are you doing now? What do they want you to do?
I had a friend who had a daughter who graduated at 16 and she didn’t want her to go to college…so her daughter did a gap year in a structured study abroad program in china.

Maybe talk to your parents about what you could be doing…like Exchnage program like Youth For Understanding or something.

It might be they feel your too young to attend college at this time. They might feel that attending when your 18 is a better option. I am sure they have your best interests at heart. Enjoy your youth and time out of HS. You deserve it! You have plenty of time to attend college and begin working. Do not be in a rush to take on all the adult burdens in life.
You will be a wonderful candidate for the college of your choice when the time comes. Finishing up HS so quickly puts you in a very small club of students.
