My Parents don't know what to do....

Also, think carefully about what you want to major in. If you aren’t sure then CC might be a good money saving option.

However, if you have a specific degree in mind, community college might not even be a viable option for you.

I have two sons going off to college in about a month. We looked at all the different possibilities for them both. Ended up that with the particular degrees they chose CC wasn’t really an option for either of them.

For son #1 his chosen field is video game design and there aren’t many schools that offer that. There is a community college fairly near us that has a related degree, but doesn’t offer a bachelors…he would need to transfer to a different college for that. After checking into it, we learned that he would STILL need to do four years at the university even if he started out at the CC given the sequence of classes he’ll need to take. At that point it was obvious that community college wasn’t a viable option.

Son #2 - Art school. One of the things he’s looking forward to most is foundation year where he’ll get to dabble in lots of different art forms and try them all out. There’s no way he could get that at a community college. Some community colleges have a few art classes, but ultimately that would just NOT be the right placement for him.

So, while community college can be a good option for some and is attractive to parents because of the lower cost, it’s NOT always the best option depending on what you want to major in.

And, perhaps I’m stating the obvious, but there are student loans available. A lot of debt isn’t a good thing…but if it makes an education possible then student loans open up some options for you. (When I was college age I had no clue that student loans were a possibility. I HAD to go to community college and was not encouraged to get a bachelors degree. I just wish I’d had a better grasp of what my options were.)

Well what i’ve gotten it down to is engineering and physics. Ah don’t know much about the details on majors.

If you can get a 30 on the ACT or 1940 on the SAT, you may be eligible for the Questbridge program.
