Basically my parents don’t feel comfortable sharing their financial information that I need to fill for fasfa. I have tried talking to them about it and they still won’t give me the information so I was wondering can I just quality as a independent student. I really need help paying for college. I’m 18 if that helps
No you can’t just decide to qualify yourself as independent.
Are your parents planning to fully fund your college costs? If not, how are they expecting those cost to be paid?
No, you can’t qualify as an independent student, particularly if you are dependent on them. FAFSA evaluates whether or not you qualify for federal grants and low interest rate Federally guaranteed student loans. If your parents would rather just pay for your education, they don’t need to complete the form.
Are you sure that they have filed federal income tax returns? If it is that they just don’t want you to know about their income, you can give them the key and let them input their own financial information for the parent section.
Just have them fill it out then. We filled it out for our kids. I don’t expect them to know all the numbers etc and just easier for us to do it anyway… They were to busy with essays etc.
You need to tell your parents that your college education will have to be completely covered by their checkbook.
Just checking for accuracy…you graduated from HS in 2018 and are currently on a gap year?
What do your parents want you to do after this gap year ends?
“I will graduate high school in 2018 and plan to start college in 2019”
In another post, you stated that you already graduated from high school and are taking a gap year now.
You also stated that you never took the SAT while in high school, and will be taking it for the first time in November. (I suggest you do some self-studying before taking it.)
Where do you live? You state you want to go to Georgia Tech or UGA. Are you a GA resident?
If your parents don’t want to fill out the FAFSA, can they fully fund your college education? What parameters have they given you for college?
I’ll be taking it in December and yes I’m self studying. I’m a Georgia resident and I’m going to apply to university of Georgia and probably Ga Tech. No they can’t afford to pay for my tuition that why I really need to file for fafsa to help cover the cost.
You do realize that the FAFSA is an application that is sent to the schools you apply to?
If you qualify for Federal financial aid, then the government only covers up to $6K per year in a Pell grant; it also may make you eligible for government loans. Please don’t rely on FAFSA only to cover your fees.
Tell your parents that the FAFSA is sent to the schools where you hope to attend. If you and your parents have filled out the FAFSA, the school’s FA offices check to see if you qualify for some of their in-house scholarships or loans. NO FAFSA means no help from either the school or the government.
I know that FAFSA won’t cover everything. I just want to lessen the cost. I’ll try to explain again to my parents.
Do you qualify for HOPE?
How can he Apply as an Independent?
Parents might not yield, he needs options.
^ He can’t.
You MUST have it filled out to take out your federal loans. And you MAY get a grant that never has to be paid back in addition to that. There is no way around it, they must fill it out if you want those things. They can have their own ID so you don’t see the info if they want.
Try to gather some information about FAFSA and what it is and how it is used to help your parents understand that if they do not fill it out, YOU will be hurt financially.
Yesterday there was a big article in the Denver Post about FAFSA and how much money is left on the table when families don’t fill it out. It explained how the system works. See if there is something similar in your local papers or if the school(s) have any info to help you convinced them to help you. There should be some FAQs on the FAFSA webpages that may lift their concerns.
“Do I have to pay for college if I complete the FAFSA?”
“Will the IRS get a copy of this?”
“What if I do not fill out the FAFSA for my child?” (and the answer is you won’t receive any federal aid and many state programs also require the fafsa)
Do your parents understand that THEY can fill out FAFSA and you don’t need to see the info that they put in???
They don’t need to GIVE you THEIR info. THEY have their info and THEY can put the numbers in while you’re in another room. Then when they get to the student section, you can either put in your numbers, or they can put in your numbers.
How do they EXPECT college to get paid for???
@“aunt bea” he will only get a $6000 Pell Grant if his family EFC is $0.
We have no idea what his family income actually is, and if he would even qualify for need based aid other than the $5500 freshman Direct Loan.
Yes, I was painting the best case scenario. Thanks for clarifying @thumper1!
You can tell your parents they can use IRS TOOL. It promise it will keep things private for them
