And also did you say that your parents don't have a problem with you starting in January as opposed to August?
Why don't you ask them what a difference of 5 months is going to do? I'd like to know.

they way I read it was that they didn't mind her waiting before starting the local college. she was considering waiting and then leaving since she'll be 18 and legally able.

but definitely post this in the parents forum.

Get an adult whom your parent trusts to speak to them about going away. It so happened that I got into a camp in another state-5 hours of flight away. I told them after I got accepted but my parents stubbornly refused to let me leave because they said someone as young as me (17 too) cannot take care of herself well and that they are afraid something might happen...anything can happen really. (since Im the only child they are extra careful and protective) Anyhow, I managed to get an adult, a good friend of ours and had her talk to my parents for me. It worked. My parents let me leave all by myself and now I came back feeling like I had the best week of my life...
sorry that was a long story. But if you cannot persuade them yourself, do ask a friend, a mature and experienced adult (a parent) to talk to them instead.

Yeah I think you should try to convince your parents. Don't run away that's stupid. 4 months (leaving in Jan intead of August) won't really change your personality or maturity that much, especially if you're just at home. I went to college 2 months after turning 17 and I took care of myself fine. If your parents are really that scared tell them that you'll do your own laundry and learn how to cook this coming year so you'll know how to take care of yourself. Honestly, if you learn those 2 things you'll be more ready to take care of yourself than half of other freshmen. Do your parents think that 18 year olds are better at taking care of themselves? Girls tend to be better than boys anyway so if your parents had another son would they not let him go to college until he was 19 or 20 or something?
