I'm a SCEA hopeful from Long Island. I have some questions about standardized testing. I took the New SAT for the first time and got a 2100 (Combined with my Old Sat Score). I realize this sucks for admission to Stanford. I also have taken 3 subject tests: American History 760, Biology 800, and Chemistry 690. I was on the Stanford Website and it says they reccomend a Math IIC. So should I take the Math IIC on the October 8th test day, and take the ACT on the October 22nd test day. But if i submit scores from both SAT and ACT Stanford also says they will look at the SAT more. Do you think its okay just to send in the ACT for SCEA. My reccomendations, essays, transcript and such is amazing. But I'm not the greatest test taker. I know if I work hard I can land at least a 34 on the ACT. And last but not least, SCEA has to be postmarked by November 1st. If i send my ACT directly to Stanford when I take it on the 22nd is that acceptable.

Please help. I feel like I have the best chance of getting in SCEA and my dream school is Stanford. My parents arent too sure about unleashing on the west coast but I think its best for me. Thanks.

I get a shock every time I see people pining for Cali, when I'm struggling with all my might to get the heck out. It must be the same everywhere. My parents are chanting "Bruins! Bruins! Bruins!" and I'm like "Brewers! Brewers! Brewers!" (UCLA and Vassar mascots, respectively). Anyway, if you're sending in your SATII scores, the adcoms will have to see your SATI scores because the collegeboard just does everything in one fell swoop. If they really put more emphasis on it over the ACT, I see little point in taking the latter. You can try, though, maybe if they see an exceptionally high score there they'll cut you some slack.

thanks for the input. haha cali looks amazing when you live on the east coast. Do you think they will mind not having the SAT II Math IIc Score?

Well, if your regular SAT math score was below your potential, you could prove yourself through the SATII. I got a 720 on the SAT, ick, but I hope the 780 MathII will raise me up to par. It's actually easier because it's ALL math for an hour, instead of this ridiculous hopping around and switching gears. And the material covered is on a higher level, so it was easier for me because it's hard for me to reach back to seventh grade Algebra.

Yeah i got a 700 on math which is embarassing lol. 710 on writing and a 690 on verbal (which was from the old sat). If i take the New SAT in October then I think i'll just be able to get it out in time for SCEA. I won't have the SAT II Math II C but hopefully i get a high math score and I'll be good to go. thanks again.

If you're good at math, I'd say definitely take the IIC (especially because Stanford recommends it). In that case, if you think you'd do better on the ACT than you did on the SAT, taking that too wouldn't hurt (and would probably help a little).

In my opinion, taking the IIC is a higher priority for you than taking the SAT over again...

this is what i thought i should do, take math IIC and the act. and send both those in the day i take the test by filling out the code. im not sure whether itll get there in time though for SCEA deadline. would it look bad if adcoms were seeing this though:

SAT I:

MATH - 700
VERBAL - 690
WRITING 710

SAT II:

BIOLOGY - 800
CHEMISTRY - 690
US HISTORY - 760
MATH IIC - 780 (PROJECTED)

ACT:
34 (PROJECTED)

on the stanford website they say that if both scores from sat and act are submitted they will put more bearing on the sat score, which is not very high for me at this time since i have only taken it once.

i recently read about being able to do an optional update of scores if u are waitlisted regular admission, is it possible to do this update after submitting scores for SCEA. if it is i could get a new sat score during november and hopefully it would be reviewed before they send out admissions decisions in mid december.

I know you can do an update if you're deferred SCEA (I was deferred and they sent me a little update form -- the questions were general enough that I'm sure you could put new test scores down if you want, though I didn't). As for november scores, I think last year they were too late, but I don't remember...

I'd definitely say that the IIC is more important for you to take than the SAT I, especially if you really think you'll do well on it. And putting "more bearing" on the SAT score doesn't mean they won't look at the ACT score at all; any regard given to it would be helpful.

Finally... test scores aren't everything. I was in your place a year ago and I know how important they seem right now, but honestly, they're not going to get you accepted. So start working on things that can get you accepted -- writing your essays, presenting your extracurriculars, etc. etc. -- anything that displays who you are and what you care about.

wow, i feel so much better now. its funny bc i woke up stressing over all this and uve put it all into perspective for me and i feel good. yeah i decided on taking math IIc and the act in october, and putting in the stanford code so its sent immediately. I completely agree with what you were saying about how extracurriculars and reccomendations and such are what will really get me accepted. Do you reccommend submitting a resume or just to fill out the extracurric part of the application? Thanks a bunch.

I'm filling out the EC part of the application and putting other stuff in the "Additional Information" section. I've heard some people are sending Brag Sheets as well.

Im not the brag sheets kind of guy, so I was thinking of sticking with what you are doing. the application seems like its a good evaluation of the applicant. they either want me or they dont, i just hope its the former. thanks for the input!

i dont think stanford allows you to send any extra stuff like brag sheets. and the additional info thing is only for like special circumstances if i remember correctly

I can't access the Stanford Application online yet. I'm doing the additional info thing for the Common App., but Stanford doesn't take that, I was just assuming they have the same system. I'll check as soon as I can get at it, though.
