My SAT score is 1490... is that good? Should I re-take it?

I recently receieved my SAT scores back...

Critical Reading 520
Math 440
Writing 530

and added them all up...
1490.

Is that a good score?

Should I re-take the SAT's?

If it is just an O.K. score, I would like to take it over again to make my score better.

Thanks to all who reply :)

Unfortunately, that is not a "good score." It is around average though, maybe a tiny bit lower. If you study enough you should be able to raise it. Definitely try re-taking it or try the ACT. Either way, make sure to prep.

It also depends what schools you're planning to apply to.

Aww man lol thought so. Thank you.

You may want to try the ACT as some people do better on it. How "good" your score is really relative to what schools you are applying to, but overall, I believe the national average is around 1600.

BTW, my score was 1490...on the old SAT that was out of 1600.

It definitely merits a retake if you're applying to any competitive schools.

Retake it and get some review books- the blue book is a must!

Thanks everyone

yea you should retake them..

dont worry too much.. the first time taking the SATs is always tough and frustrating..

get a good SAT prep book..maybe a tutor (helped me alot)..and see how it goes about the next time around..

and as a lot of ppl have been suggesting.. there is the ACT.. which many do well on even if they have a low SAT score..

good luck with everything.

yea retake

i would retake the SAT's no matter what (unless like 2400) because after taking the test you learn alot about the test itself, how to study from it, etc.

your score can only go up

thinkdifferent-how pretentious and uncalled for. you werent even in the converation--why would you say BTW? seriously someone is looking for somewhere to brag

and i was told the average for each section is 500, so 1500 total. thus 1490 is about avergae

Yes, it is average. I would not say it is quite a "bad" score - there are definitely colleges which accept an average score. If I were you I would find out about the admission process at the colleges you are interested in. If it is entirely numbers-based (GPA+SAT), it certainly couldn't hurt to go slightly above average.

finally a human who doesn't study 24/7 or has a huge brain

your score is a tad bit below average. depends on where you want to go. if you want to go to a weak state school, your score is fine. but even if thats where you want to go to, you should still retake the SAT for scholarship offers.

Well thanks everyone I'm definitely going to take it over again to increase my scores and learn more about the SATs... and I undoubtedly want to be accepted into more than a "just average" college. Thanks :)

cool good luck

I am a ninth grader ; I earned total SAT score of 1790
( CR :550)
( Math:640)
( Writing:600)
Do you think this is a good score ?
Is it possible to earn the perfect 2400 score as a junior ?

Nothing is impossible. I’ve seen one who improve his score from 1900 to 2380 just in a month. You still have time so don’t worry too much, though, honestly, your score now is still not good enough.

Compared to 9th grade talent search kids (for lack of any other pool of SAT-taking 9th graders) / college-bound seniors:
CR:550 = 48th / 67th percentile
Math:640 = 78th / 83rd percentile
Writing:600 = 81st / 82nd percentile
CR+M:1190 = 64th / 79th percentile

So I vote for it being a good score. IMHO the significant gap between CR and M makes it less likely that you’ll get a 2400, but it’s not like you need a 2400 for anything. It doesn’t improve your admissions chances over, say, a 2250.

Kariman, welcome to College Confidential.

Unfortunately, you’ve just done two things that will annoy the bejeezus out of people on CC: you’ve hijacked somebody else’s thread, and you’ve revived an old thread that had been dormant in over a year and a half.

If you have a question to ask, don’t append it to somebody else’s thread. That’s kind of like saying, “But enough about you, let’s talk about me!” Start your own thread instead.

Similarly, if you’re browsing an old thread and it prompts a question, don’t post it there. Start a new thread to ask it. You can tell the age of the thread by looking at the dates in the top-left corner of each post.

Finally, a lot of people will find your question itself problematic. It doesn’t matter very much what SAT score you get as a freshman; there’s no such thing as a good or bad SAT score for a 9th-grader, IMO. Additionally, there’s nothing magic about a 2400, and as a goal, a 2400 strikes me as a little bit…well, shallow.

Sorry for any inconvenience ; I didn’t really check the thread’s date
sorry again
