I said I'd never do this, but...

I'm asking it. That annoying, perfectionist question so many people ask: "Should I retake my SATs?"

Before I continue: I'm perfectly happy and content with my grade. I reached the goal I set for myself and went a bit over, so I can honestly say I am proud of the grade I got- sure it's not a 2300+ but I feel like I did well regardless.

1370 - CR + M
2100- total
670 CR
700 M
730 W

See there's my problem, though. Would it look horrible if my best grade was in the Writing section? I heard most schools don't even look at writing other than maybe placement?

Also, I lied. I'm not COMPLETELY happy, I would've preferred to have done better on critical reading than math, but that's just 'cause I hate math with a burning passion. Either way, that wouldn't really be the reason I'd retake this annoying test.

All in all, I don't really feel like retaking it AT ALL since I reached my goal. I don't even know when I'd retake it- I'm so busy! It's just that this was my first time so people are telling me I should, because most likely I'd improve. And again, writing shouldn't be the highest score, should it?

Sorry for being one of those annoying "OMG MUST RETAKE NEED PERFECT SCOREEEEEEEEEE" type people... =/

If you genuinely feel like you can do better the next time and go up, do it again. When I did it the first time, my maths score was really crappy and I moved it up by a 100 points. In this case however, all your scores are pretty high and unless you are convinced that you didn’t do it to the best of your ability, I don’t really see the point in retaking. 2100 is a great score :)

Yes, I think you should retake it. It couldn’t hurt.

It depends on the schools. Top Universities are usually 2150+ (median) or 2250+ for Ivies, but if you have other unique hooks you still have a good shot. My advise would be to take it again in May/June when you might have more time near the end of school.

Like Fantasma said, it depends on what college you want to go to. If you are looking at a top 50 college (especially Ivies or a school like MIT/Stanford/UC Berkeley etc.) you should aim for at least 2200 unless you have a 4.0 GPA or some solid ECs.

Well, I was hoping for schools like Vassar for upper caliber-Swarthmore, College of William and Mary (I realize there’s more than just SAT scores when it comes to acceptance!).

But I also was looking at SUNY Geneseo, let’s say, or someplace with good merit scholarship (which I also know depends on other factors a well).

After a successful retake attempt without too much extra work, I would suggest taking it a second time. I’m glad I took it twice, even though I was initially happy with my scores (except for math). Retook it for math (only took math practice tests) and they all went up.

Your SAT score is good for those schools, I think, but you’d be better with a little higher. Go for it if you have time.

Yes, I believe you should retake. I scored 2060 on the April SAT in 2006. I then prepared over the summer, and scored 2400 on the Ocotber SAT.

Good Luck!

Well, I don’t know about a 2400, but I’ve decided to take it again in May. :)

I’ll probably go over more vocabulary (I slacked off with that) and refresh my mind as the test nears, but I’m not going to be stressing about it as much as before- too much to do to worry!

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. :)

^good idea, don’t forget a lot of colleges superscore, so if you get your reading up, then take your best scores and you’ll have an even better score.

I was in the same situation! My goal where I said I wouldn’t retake was 2100, then I got a 2140, and was happy but still unsure whether to retake. It’s annoying, right? Maybe try the ACT if you’re hesitant about sitting through another SAT; I tried that and did much better than the SAT! For the schools you’re looking at, though, you shouldn’t be too bad with what you already have.
