My Schedule: Please help!

I just finished my orientation today and I absolutely loved it!

I am a DA for Kelley and I desire to get into Kelley Honor's so my adviser gave me an easy schedule for the Fall.

I already have 17 credit hours from AP, including micro and macro with 4s. I took physics 201(202 for next semester) from IU in High School but I got a B so my GPA is 3.0 right now :/

BUS-X 170 - HOW BUSINESS WORKS
MATH-M 118 - FINITE MATHEMATICS (Honor's was full :( I held back M211 for next semester)
BUS-K 201 - THE COMPUTER IN BUSINESS
PHIL-P 150 - ELEMENTARY LOGIC (what the heck is this class lol)
INFO-I 186 - INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATICS (?)

This is 16 credit hours which should not be that difficult. I want an easy first semester and I will load it much more for next semester. I am striving strong for Honor's Kelley and Honor's Hutton.

PLEASE RESPOND QUICKLY SO I CAN CHANGE BEFORE THE $8.5 FEE

Oh, my Kelley adviser and I arranged this as my alternatives:

BUS-A 100 Basic Accounting
MATH-M 211 Calculus I
CMCL-C 228 Argumentation and Public Advocacy
PHYS-P 202 General Physics II
BIOL-L 104 Introduction to Biology

Looks fairly easy overall…much easier than mine (I’m a DA hoping to get into kelley honors as well). Any particular reason you aren’t taking many icore prereqs? I know you want it to be easy but i would think you might want to get more than two (three including your micro credit I suppose) out of the way.

Intro to logic is a very low GPA A&H course.

What’s with the science classes? They’re GPA killers, and unless you have a good reason to take them you should probably stay away.

Are you planning to be an informatics minor? If not, there is no reason to take intro to informatics.

I’d recommend dropping PHIL-P 150 and adding A100. Then maybe you can take one of the other I-core prereqs the other 8 weeks. If you have a choice, take A100 the second 8 weeks so that you avoid having 3 major exams in 28 hours.

Working, are you planning to apply to medical school later? Kelley does not require the high calculus and biology/physics classes you are taking. Your schedule looks very difficult for a direct admit, especially one that is trying to get into Kelley honors. 16 credits-- with a math class that meets 4X per week and a five credit science class with a lab will cut into your time to serve in leadership positions in student organizations at IU/Kelley. Also, a “B” in physics 1 in high school doesn’t portend all that well for your P202 grade. That is a good grade for a difficult class, but you will need a 3.7 to apply for Kelley honors. The physics class is five credits; a low grade in that one class and your gpa will be wrecked for a good while.

Also, you can take M211 and M212 at Ivy Tech in summer (as well as M119), and not have to worry about it affecting your IU gpa.

The leadership position EC’s are much more important than gpa or difficulty of schedule in selecting Kelley honors students. Every one of the 300+ students that apply to Kelley honors will have a good gpa, since it takes 3.7+ gpa to apply; the 150 or so that are selected will generally have EC’s superior to the ones who are not selected, and it takes time to participate in EC’s. A lot of Kelley honors students come to IU with more than twenty or thirty advanced credits, and take minimum full time loads (12 or 13 credits only) in order to have the time to establish themselves in leadership positions. They don’t take more than 12 or 13 credits their whole time at IU, as the advanced credit they came to IU with and cc credit from summer school for one or two summers to get transfer credit for Icore prerequisites is easily enough to graduate in four years.

Here is a list of student organizations at IU.
[A-Z Big List: Indiana University Bloomington](http://www.iub.edu/biglist/index.shtml)

Also, if you are applying to Hutton Honors after first semester, you need to complete a minimum of 14 credits and 3.7 gpa first semester. Your schedule looks difficult for someone trying to get a 3.7 first semester.

bthomp1- I think you are looking at the wrong schedule. Those are the alternative which I’m not even enrolled in atm. I have the schedule at the top.

hkem123- what do you mean low gpa A&H? does that mean it’s easy or it will give me a low gpa? A100 is full. I’m skeptical about that class too. Do you know of another alternative?

theoldguitarist- I have micro and macro done already though. So taking two business classes won’t be too bad. I want that Kelley Honors and need an easy schedule. If you are taking 3 and i’m taking 2, I don’t think I’m too far off. Also, many many courses are full, i’ll take compas-1 next semester along with a few others.

the last two on my schedule are giving me second thoughts. I don’t think I want the philosophy class. The Informatics was just for some fun since I like computers and had CS as a possible minor. Math is also on the list of what I thought might be a minor for me so that explains the m211.

I’ll be planning on taking IUPUI summer courses. maybe just two a summer.

Side Note:

my schedule gives me at the most 3 hours a day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday

while I have just 2 hours of class wednesday and Friday.

I don’t think this is too difficult but I’m wondering about alternative for the

last two, the Philosophy is certainly a filler that seemed like the only class to take. It fullfills one A&H course that I would need. I’d gladly take another A&H course if I liked it. Idk what could fill in for Informatics but that is worth 4 credit hours so i’m thinking it may be difficult. Any other possible options?

I get what you’re saying, but just to clarify, I said that, including your micro credit, you will have completed three icore prereqs. I’m actually going in done with my composition and calculus requirements and am still taking 5 icore prereqs first semester, so it is a bit different, not that it matters I suppose.

You seem to understand that you need to take an easy schedule to get into Kelley Honors, but you have a very challenging schedule made up. Low GPA A&H means that the grade distribution is very low. In other words, it’s a very difficult class that you should not take as an A&H because it’s not going to be easy to get an A. You should substitute it for an easier A&H with a higher average GPA.

There’s no reason to be skeptical about A100. You have to take it your freshman year regardless, so you can’t really avoid it factoring into your Kelley Honors application. It doesn’t matter though because A100 grades have gone up significantly since Winston started teaching the class. Kelley Honors caliber students will not have problems with A100.

Edit: I suppose you could get out of having A100 go into your honors GPA by taking it the summer after freshman year, but I really don’t think that’s necessary.

Theoldguitarist - I’m certainly going to load the courses next semester. I want an easy schedule now to get involved and into the Honors program. Plus, college will not be familiar and socially this might be the best time to meet people. Are you taking all Icore classes?

post your schedule so I can see it. I’m really happy with everything except the last two. What’s your real name? I hope to see you in Kelley! My name is Bobby

If you wanna talk any more about Kelley or schedules or anything really feel free to pm me.

So I went through the list and found (A&H) courses I might like all at the lower 100 level so I know they are not too advanced for me.

MUS-Z 101 Music for the Listener
THTR-T 100 Introduction to Theatre
POLS-Y 105 Introduction to Political Theory ( looks like the best for me, yet I am not sure. I do have credit in Political Science for the 4 on the US government and politics AP exam, yet I do not have much interest in Political Science.)
PHIL-P 105 Critical Thinking
MUS-Z 101 Music for the Listener
CMLT-C 151 Introduction to Popular Culture
CMCL-C 121 Public Speaking
CLAS-C 101 Ancient Greek Culture#
CLAS-C 102 Roman Culture#
MUS-P 110 Beginning Piano Class 1, Non-Music Majors

One option is to take A100 at IUPUI in summer. It meets one only one day a week for six weeks in summers, and the content is much easier at IUPUI. Grade you get at IUPUI will show up in your IUB gpa. E270 (substitutes for E370 at IUB) with Shahrokh Towfighi in summer is a good choice too.

so I’m looking at EALC-E 100 East Asia: An Introduction to East Asia

and I will switch this for my Philosophy Class. The average GPA was ~3.0 for that class. I hope to get above an average grade though.

But on the grade distribution the Phil class with the teacher I had got an average of 3.1 GPA. I’m confused on that distribution thing that you guys keep telling me to use. It seems good but finding the average GPA is difficult because each teacher is different.

EDIT: just changed it. worked out perfectly. Gave me Less early morning classes.
Here is my class hourly breakdown:
Monday 4 hrs
Tuesday 2hrs
Wednesday 3 hrs
Thursday 2 hrs
Friday 2 hrs

with total of 16 credit hours because informatics is worth 4
