My school is STUPID!!!

I am a rising senior and I signed up to take AP calc, AP bio, AP Lit, Physics Honors, and Band. Being the smart school that my school is, they decide to schedule AP bio and AP calc the same period. So, I am prettty much being denied the opportunity to take either AP bio or AP calc. This does not make sense, why would you schedule two AP's that have interchangable classes the same period? Oh, and I plan to major in Biological Engineering, so I pretty much need a strong foundation in both biology and calculus.

my advice is to take AP Biology in school because it's generally harder than AP Calculus. Take Calculus at a community college or through a distance education program (EPGY, CTY etc.)

Make sure both will transfer to the school you want to go to.

Scheduling mishaps like this happen all the time. If you can find a sizeable chunk of each class that wants to take the other as well, you might be able to convince your school to add another section of one.

But you might also find that you are the ONLY kid with this problem.

You could always take Calc and a different science AP.

Could you do independent study?

I took ap chem last year, and I know of at least 1 or 2 other people that are in the same boat as me- im not sure that will be enuff. My guidance counselor said, she could change the period of Ap calc, but that would mean sumone in band couldn't take it. I'm thinking- Someone in Band...w-t-f ? I go to a college prep school, i think ap bio/calc is more important tha band...

at least the classes are being offered... i planned my schedule around AP chem but only 9 people signed up and they needed 10... ughh.
i'd do bio if i were you, just because calc would be easier to do independently if need be.

If you are looking at bioengineering programs in an Engineering college or a School of Engineering within a university, you really must have calculus in high school. You will be submitting an application directly to the engineering school, and virtually all of the other students will have completed calculus.

Have you already had an honors bio course? Some students take the SAT II Bio exam without taking AP Bio. If you score well on the SAT II exam, that plus calc will be better for you than AP Bio without calculus (as an engineering applicant).

My son's school chronically scheduled band and orchestra at the same time as AP Physics and AP Chem. Some students dropped out of music, others took the science courses at a university while still in high school, if their schedules worked out, and their records were good enough to be accepted into the university courses.

I, too, recommend the Calc over the bio. See if there is a different AP science class that you could take this year, but definitely take calc.

ya, I guess i will take ap calc and ap environmental.

good choice. AP Calc BC was especially challenging, but AP Bio (the test at least) was cake. I got a 4 on it without taking the class, my only studying being reading half of a review book the night before.

Bio is a cinch to self-study. Definitely take calc

I called guidance today to see my schedule...it was much worse than I thought. My school had me in 3 classes I did not sign up for, nor would i consider signing up for- chorus, volleyball, and speech- by the way i am a male- so after about 30 minutes I finally got my schedule worked out-
1. AP lit
2. AP calc
3. AP psych- was speech
4. Band
5. AP env- was chorus
6. Sr class- was volleyball
7. Physics H
