I am rising a Senior in HS
I am a African American and Native American
I have a 3.1 uw/w GPA
I got a 26 on ACT
I'm a Varsity track and XC runner
I am a leader student group on race relations, and a Leader in the Minority achievement committee at my school
I am a very creative essay writer
I have have a few nicely written recommendation letters
I took 1 AP class and most Honor level classes from 9th-11th grade, Senior course load is 5 APs, 1 IB, and 1 Honors class
I am from Cleveland, OH
I plan to major in Economics and apply Early

You’ll probably get in, but I would take the ACT again. Even one or two more points would really help. You also may want to try the SAT if you haven’t already. A lot of people do better on it than the ACT. Applying early is good. Great senior course load and ECs. As long as you maintain your good grades, you should be fine.

@lilelmo Thanks

No problem, good luck

@lilelmo extra info: I have a bad science grade trend- 9th(C,C), 10th (D,C), 11th (C,F)… Everything else is good As and Bs

Since you’re not majoring in a science, it should be okay. On your application, if there’s anywhere for you to do it, try to explain your science grades, justify them in any way possible. Being upfront about the trend will work in your benefit. If you’re taking a science this year, put as much effort as you can into getting at least a B to prove that you’re capable and dedicated.

With a D and an F on your transcript, your chances of being accepted are nearly 0. FSU has cracked down the last few years on ANY grades below a C on applicant transcripts. It doesn’t matter what classes the bad grades are in or your intended major (especially since a high percentage of applicants change their major in college anyway).

Economics is a limited access major as well, so you have to complete 52 credit hours, including a number of pre-reqs, and maintain a 2.5 GPA to be admitted to the major.

That said, I don’t quite understand how both your unweighted and your weighted GPA are a 3.1. Unless you’ve only taken a class or two that were weighted, they should differ a bit at least.

The F might hurt a bit

@pasbal my school only sends the weighted GPA, nothing else.

If your weighted GPA is only a 3.1, then yeah, you aren’t going to be accepted with that and a D and an F on your transcripts.

For in-state students, where there is a lot of competition, one grade below a C is almost an automatic deferment of any acceptance. Many people have gotten outright rejected for grades below a C on their transcript. For out-of-state, where the competition is pretty fierce, there’s no way that they can overlook two grades below a C and a low weighted GPA.

It is not just the D or F but the fact that they were received sophomore and then Junior year. I think that the fact that your GPA is only a 3.1, combined with the D and F in your Soph. and Jr. year would make FSU a reach school for you.

Yeah, I didn’t realize the 3.1 was unweighted. My only advice would be again, just be really upfront about everything and do the best you can to boost your test scores.

@lilemo is ucf any harder to get into?

No, UCF is a good bit easier. Still a good school, but not quite as competitive with admissions.

The following link is to the 2013 SUS (state university system) Admissions Tour Matrix. It will give you a sense of how competitive admissions is to all 12 of the state of Florida public universities. Also details around admission requirements and application due dates.

It also breaks it down by Summer v. Fall (for those that think applying for the summer term increases your chances).

Good Luck!

@gator88ne thanks

Honestly, you need at least a 3.5 gpa to get in. This is coming from a guy who just graduated and I most people that got in had a 3.5 gpa and a 26 act

@Gator88 This is what bugs me… the FSU admittance GPA is 3.0 for transfers but the limited access for Economics is 2.5!

@xjjlane You’re looking at two different requirements.

As a junior/senior level transfer student, you need at least a 3.0 GPA for admissions to FSU.

For any junior/senior student (including those that are already enrolled at FSU), you need at least a 2.5 GPA for economics.

For example, a CC transfer student would need at least a 3.0, which would also meet the minimum requirement for economics to be considered.

A student who is already enrolled at FSU, would only need to meet the 2.5 GPA requirement for economics to be considered.

A current student would need to tell us how competitive it is to get accepted into the Economics major (or the other limited access program). For example, a student may need at least a 3.0 GPA to be competitive.

Here is UF’s comments on Economics, I’m sure FSU is similar. So while a 2.5 GPA meets the minimum requirements, all of the transfers students have at least a 3.0 (or they couldn’t transfer to FSU in the first place).

@Gator88NE So, grade forgiveness is non-existent.
