My shots at AMHERST

Hey im a junior attending a very competitive public school in NJ. My cumulative GPA from frosh/soph year is 4.26 weighted (4.33 is an A- and 4.67 is an A in honors, 4.67 is an A and 5.00 is an A in AP). After this year i anticipate a GPA of about 4.37-4.4 somewhere in that range and will be in top 10%. My grades have been mostly A’s and A- (more A- than A’s tho, something i hate) and two B+'s. I took all the honors classes i could in frosh year (4 classes) all the honors and APs i could sophomore year (3 honors 1 AP) and all the AP’s i could in junior year (5 AP’s and 1 honors) and plan on all AP’s senior year.

i took the new SAT in january 2006 and got a 2270 (720 verbal, 760 math, 790 writing, 12 on the essay). I have taken only one sat ii, physics which was a 760. I am planning on taking math 2c in may and literature in october.

In school i am junior captain of the debate team and have been on the team since freshman year. Freshman year i was state champion runner up and have consistently done well nationally. I am also secretary for key club for a year now. Outside of school i have volunteered at the Veterans Associations Hospital and have completed over 70 hours.

I also take art in school since freshman year and was nominated for the New jersey governor’s school for visual arts and proceeded to advance in my district level as a finalist.

do you think my extra-cirriculars are too scanty? Are my grades not up to scratch? Would my art play any factor into their considerations?

btw, am an asian male idk if that hurts my chances or not

You seem like an intelligent young man who enjoys doing debate, etc. It has been said that too many EC's in order to fill the page may hurt more than a committment to a few that you truly love. I always find it is better to be yourself and be honest with yourself and others than just doing something for an ulterior motive. It may well be that next year's class may veyr well need a great debater, and that could be your hook. It depends on the applicants. Most colleges do not pick students, they pick a class, and how you fit into their needs for diversity, debaters, geography, etc. Just make sure your essays are top notch! There are no interviews, and the school wants to know WHO you are thorugh your essays. There are no absolutes in the college admission crap shoot. Just continue doing your best, apply, and Good luck!
