My son loves Richmond, after 6 weeks

My son, a freshman science scholar, was home during Fall break, and I asked him how he likes the place.

He is very glad he chose Richmond. He feels it was one of the best decisions he's ever made, and said just about everyone he talks with feels the same way. His classes all hold between 10 and 20 kids, compared to his girlfriend's classes at our state's flagship university where three of her classes have over 200 students. He likes the professors, the dorm, the kids, the food, and the parties.

He had just visited his friend at the University of Michigan, and described one difference in this way: students at Michigan LOVE Michigan, they love it so much they will fight you if you are an Ohio State fan; students at Richmond love GOING to Richmond - the school spirit doesn't compare to Michigan, but the educational and social experience is so rich and fun that the kids feel really lucky to be going to school there.

Consider this one of those Amazon.com "update" comments, written a few weeks after the sale.

Thank you so much for writing this! I’m applying early decision and am really hoping I get in. U of R is definitely my top choice and this just solidifies my desire to go there!

baywood - thanks for the update. I hope your son continues to enjoy his time at UR. It’s been a pretty interesting few weeks to have started out there.

Hi, I am a freshman scholar too and yes I love it here.
I was nervous before coming because I don’t party&drink but I love my circle of friends here.
Also, the professors are simply awesome.
And research. OMG research :D

There has been some interesting happenings here at UR though, but generally. So awesome. It also helps that I am living in the best (ie. cleanest & newest) dorm at the most quiet hall :D

@baywood, Glad to hear your son is enjoying himself!

baywood - glad to hear it! My daughter is depressed because she only has three semesters left at UR. She loves it there! She has made friends that she will have for life and she has had some, um, interesting lessons in dealing with obnoxious people. I think there has only been one prof that she really didn’t care for and several more that she absolutely loves. I hope your son gets involved with clubs and groups. My daughter has discovered rock climbing and ballroom dance - two activities that she will always be involved with now.

We had barely heard of Richmond before starting college research, but it seems everywhere we find families who say their son, cousin, etc. went there and loved it.

Here’s a little boasting I’ll do on behalf of Richmond:

The Daily Beast ranked US Colleges on the basis of how happy students are (and what percentage would make the same decision again), and U of Richmond came in 7th nationwide:

[College Rankings 2012: 25 Happiest Schools (Photos) - Newsweek and The Daily Beast](http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/galleries/2012/08/05/college-rankings-2012-25-happiest-schools-photos.html#slide_7)

I’m sure most colleges can make similar claims, and most kids are happy wherever they go. I just thought I’d pass on one student’s real life experience.

What are the “interesting happenings” you guys alluded to? Now I’m curious… :)

In my daughter’s case, nothing serious. She had a roommate last year from Bangladesh who tried to stay on Bangladesh time. She would be on the phone at 2:00 in the morning and sleeping at 4:00 in the afternoon. On top of that she was a very loud snorer. This year she has a few sorority girls living down the hall that have a tendency of over-indulging and getting a little carried away. However, she absolutely loves UR and almost everyone she has met there!

This year is off to a very controversial start as the board blind-sided track and soccer teams by discontinuing those in favor of adding lacrosse. A lot of people are very upset at that decision. I think President Ayers is fantastic leader but he lost a lot of credibility in my eyes with this decision.

CRMX, more or less the same thing that PAV alluded to.

Baywood, our daughter, a sophomore, couldn’t be happier, and we as parents, couldn’t sing UR’s praises any louder. For her, academics have been rigorous and interesting, 13 different profs. (with the exception of 1 “clinker”) have demonstrated excitement about their subject areas and strong dedication to teaching/mentoring, social life/club involvement has been rich and amazing (we actually worry that she is over-involved but she’s in heaven!), the weather is addictive (we’re from the northeast), and the city of Richmond and its environs have proven to be lovely, welcoming, and full of opportunity. She declared her major last week - and has gotten excellent, pragmatic advice on continuing education and career moves from her academic advisor, profs. in her areas of interest, and pre-professional advisors. Our son, a h.s. junior, is desperately searching for a different school to rival his sister’s, so he can “chart his own path” elsewhere, but we’re skeptical that he’ll find it. In short, I think you and your son can expect “the love” to continue!

Can someone please tell me if I have a chance of being accepted at University of Richmond. I am an international student, and my problem is that I have 540 on critical reading section on the sat 1. But I have taken TOEFL (still no results, but I think at least 95), my writing was about 650, and I also have taken sat 2 subject maths level 2 and got an 800!

My toefl result is 103, I just received it :)
