So Spring term just started and it's hard to believe that the year has gone by so quickly. The application process was a stressful period of time in my life. I had people coming at me from all directions, telling me where to go to school. Ultimately, I choose the school that felt like the right fit and I couldn't be happier. Despite getting into some other great schools (UCLA, Berkeley, Wisconsin, Texas, Michigan, etc.), I decided to go to the school that I believed would provide me with the best academic and social atmosphere. I am doing quite well in school (3.85 GPA) as a double major in Political Science and Economics. I'm hoping to go to law school after I graduate.

That’s great to hear, MickJag. I know quite a number of kids at UO who are really happy there!

Wow you turned down some impressive schools to go to UO. It must have been a difficult decision. Glad it worked out for you!
Can you elaborate a bit on why you like it so much? Are you a big sports fan or an outdoors enthusiast? From the research I’ve done it seems those are big attractions at the school and I’m wondering if a student isn’t into either they might not be as happy. Thanks

My D is neither outdoorsy nor interested in sports, but her interest in UO has more to do with the quirky feel of the place, the relaxed-but-busy vibe, and the atmosphere of creativity there.

I enjoy sports (and going to Ducks games), but I wouldn’t say that I’m a huge sports fan. Like many people at U of O, I enjoy exercising but I wouldn’t consider myself to be a gym rat. People are very open and friendly at UO. It is a laid back school, but not in the sense that people don’t work hard and just party all the time. I’ve actually been pretty impressed with the academics so far (especially for a public school).

Right now I got the admissions from Emory, American university, and UO. As an international student, I really care about the ranking, however, UO offers me $7500/yr scholarship, and I just don’t know how to make the decision. So why you think UO fits you???

If ranking is important to you I think Emory would be your best bet. It’s a great school, but a completely different atmosphere from UO.

YiR- I would advise you to visit the schools you got into, but you are an international student so I’m guessing that this probably isn’t financially feasible for you. UO is a good school and you actually got a nice sized scholarship from them. I like UO because it has pretty solid academics, a friendly student body, is situated in a nice college town and has reasonably accessible professors (for a flagship university). The town of Eugene is very cool and appeals to all different types of people.

YiR: care to share where are you from and what are you grades like? i’m quite curious about international admissions and scholarships to UO.

Nice MickJag. A question, are you part of the Honors College? I know it’s very hard to get into…

Are you also planning to go to grad school? Is the atmosphere just nice at Oregon (and also how safe is it)?
