My why yale topic--is it too...non-academic?

Honestly, I applied to Yale because I learned Sam Tsui went there. I'm a fan, and a big arts person, and what they do appealed to me. So I mentioned YouTube. Is this too informal? It's definitely personal, but I don't want to be too flippant and say useless things hahahaa. What do you think?
If you care to share (because sharing is infinitely caring ;)) what did you write?

Mentioning YouTube isn’t too informal. Mentioning Sam Tsui though, when he longer attends Yale – and no one else at Yale is currently doing quite what he did – is akin to saying “I want to go to Harvard because I love Yo-Yo Ma.” It’s a reason, but is it relevant? Mentioning the creative opportunities available at Yale and what specifically interests you might be a better way to go.

Hahaha, I also applied for a similar reason ;D But no, I did not mention him in my Why Yale, nor do I think it’s a good idea.

you could mention it in passing, maybe as an example of a person who did what you want to do at Yale, but I wouldn’t base your entire essay on it

Haha, I agree with everyone here. Don’t be like “I want to go to Yale because Kurt Schneider went there and he’s the most amazing person ever because he can play 8 instruments and is a Chess Grandmaster” or “I would kill to go to Yale because Sam Tsui went there and he has the most amazing voice ever.”

Mention something in passing if you feel necessary.

If you said that you wanted to go to Yale because it encouraged and nurtured people like…, then I think that could be OK.

Agree with Hunt.
