Faculty come and go too you know . . . its usually the accomplished undergraduates and graduate students that make a school

I thought this thread would be about YOU choosing your favorites. Guess not. US News thread.

^ Most people’s favorite universities are usually correlated to top USNEWS schools. Everyone loves shiny things

Notice how it’s people’s opinions that correlate with USNWR, not the other way around. As in, people just take what’s given without even questioning or doing research. Kind of like the way Fox News works.

If USNWR didn’t come up with some rankings that remotely fit into public perception/reality, there would be no way it would be so popular or even exist.

Your assertion that USNWR is dictating our individuals rankings is wrong. Public opinion dictates USNWR. Individuals may regard one university higher than another but the entire ranking structure wouldn’t fluctuate if no ranking body existed.

Moving up and down a few ranks are as much change as you can expect from personal opinion.

(There are exceptions in that there are a bunch of great LACs out there along with more obscure universities but the pecking order among the big name national universities is well established.)

I’m going to be different and pick my favorites, yay!

tb et al, this thread is different from what Xiggi cited on post #17. I DID NOT request any list (of top 8) on that thread. As previously indicated, you are invited to post your opinions based on any references that are deemed reliable or trustworthy, including but NOT LIMITED TO resources e.g. USNews, Forbes, Newsweek, Money, USA Today, Washington Monthly, and Princeton Review. Upon collecting your top 8 lists, I will summarize the findings and differences among your lists will be discussed. So far I observe that several lists (including mine) are not derived from USNews.

Private
Princeton Harvard Stanford Yale Cornell Brown Penn Columbia

Best Public
Iowa Illinois Wisconsin UC- Berkeley UC- Los Angeles Virginia Ohio State Pennslyvania State North Carolina

UC Berkeley

UMich Ann Arbor
UW-Madison
UIUC

Summary of findings of the 16 lists that YOU and I posted:

We first start with Non-ivy Private and if it works out then we move on to best public. If not, then I am willing to take advices for modifications. .

Non-ivy Private:

Among 16 lists, the most frequent mentioned 8 institutes are MIT (14), Cal Tech (13), Chicago (13), Stanford (12), Duke (11), JHU (10), Northwestern (8), and WUSTL (8). Other elite universities .e.g. CMU, Rice, and Vanderbilt received 4, 3, and 3 votes. LAC powerhouses Williams and Amherst received 5 votes apiece.

I try not to overstretch my interpretation of the results from your list. My observations are:

 1. Assuming each list is independent from one another (obviously true) and your lists are based on references that are reliable or trustworthy, top 8 should be narrowed down to the 13 institutes mentioned above for their frequent appearances on our lists.
 2. If we directly following the number of votes received, top 8 will be MIT (14), Cal Tech (13), Chicago (13), Stanford (12), Duke (11), JHU (10), Northwestern (8), and WUSTL (8). Things are not this simple because the sample size of 16 is too small.
 3. However, based on reputation, their students’ selectivity, and my best judgment, MIT, Cal Tech, Chicago, Stanford, and Duke should deserve top 5 spots of the group, which was nicely reflected in your votes. Five of the eight spots were taken, three more to go. The question is “Are JHU, Northwestern, and WUSTL” more deserved to be for the 3 remaining spots than the rest (i.e., CMU, Rice, Vanderbilt, Williams and Amherst)?”

Coolbreze,

Iowa over UMich and UCB? That’s the cutest thing I’ve ever heard! I smell sour grapes…

“Harvard University would be nothing today without the generous alumni support it receives. The money from its graduates over the past several centuries has allowed the institution to hire top-notch faculty, build state-of-the art facilities, implement a superior financial aid policy and provide 1,600 of the most talented students in the globe with a world-class education.”

Harvard would be nothing today without the generous government support it has received, ranging from its favored position in the state of Massachusetts over the past several centuries to the federal tax benefits for donors and gains from its endowment, etc. Yet, it is very much a private business.

Non-ivy Private (continue):

JHU, Northwestern, Williams, and Amherst are selected for the remaining 3 spots based on their reputation, student selectivity, and yield data.

Stanford, MIT, Caltech, Duke, Chicago, JHU, Northwestern, Williams, Amherst are in.

Best public:

Again, among 16 lists, the most frequent mentioned (at least two appearances) 8 institutes are Michigan (15), UCLA (15), Berkeley (14), UNC (14), UVA (13), Wisconsin (11), W&M (8), and UIUC (7). Other elite public universities .e.g. Penn State and U of Washington received 4 and 2 votes.

Assuming each list is independent from one another (obviously true) and your lists are based on references that are reliable or trustworthy, top 8 should be narrowed down to the 10 institutes mentioned above for their frequent appearances on our lists.

Based on their reputation, their students’ selectivity, and my best judgment, Michigan (15), UCLA (15), Berkeley (14), UNC (14), UVA (13), Wisconsin (11), W&M (8), and UIUC (7) are all well-deserved to be on the top 8 list.

Berkeley, UVA, UCLA, Michigan, UNC, W&M, Wisconsin, and UIUC are in.

If you agree with my interpretations, please rank the Top 8 for non-ivy private and best public. For non-ivy private, ONLY Stanford, MIT, Caltech, Duke, Chicago, JHU, Northwestern, Williams, and Amherst should be considered. For best public, ONLY focus on Berkeley, UVA, UCLA, Michigan, UNC, W&M, Wisconsin, and UIUC.

My list as an example:

Ivies:

Harvard=Princeton=Yale
Brown=Columbia=Cornell=Dartmouth=Penn

Non-ivy Private:

JHU=Northwestern=Williams=Amherst

Best Public:

Berkeley=UVA=UCLA=Michigan=UNC=W&M
Wisconsin=UIUC

Ofcourse Iowa is a better school than UMich.

Also when I listed my schools there was no specific order, all random but top privates and pulblics.
