NASS Session I

I went to session 1 and they had us take off our shoes/socks before entering the mudpit, so that wasn't a problem. The only thing that could possibly mess up your shoes is the Severn, which we were only in for like 10 seconds. So, the water had no effect on my running shoes. In fact, I just got back from a run with the same shoes.

I believe the list tells you to bring 2 pairs: 1 new-ish and 1 old. If you really don't want to put your brand new pair of running shoes into the Severn, then I would recommend bringing an older pair to wear to Sea Trials. But, it shouldn't really matter either way.

Some things that weren't on the USNA list that I remember wishing I had brought (and neither of my 2 other roommates brought either) were shampoo/soap (didn't think of them as "toiletries") and tissues. Also, bring LOTS of pairs of socks (like 15).

We had a mud pit session one but I think that they got mad because they had just cleaned and refilled the pool and even though we showered we were still filthy and got the pool pretty dirty. I think they might have scrapped the pool though too. The bear pit was the most fun part. You got really dirty and sandy and my legs actually chaffed pretty badly on the E-course which we ran after but I pinned one of the squad leaders (four years of wrestling but still it was cool).

will second the socks part. nothing worse than putting on crusty, sweaty socks that are really dirty. and I would suggest bringing some sort of undershirt (I took some cheap wife-beaters that I didn't care if they got messed up) because your PT shirts don't get dry most of the time and you have to continue to wear them. an undershirt makes the whole process of putting on a sweaty shirt more bearable.

hey everyone its tommorw. My flight comes in a little before 10? anyone within that range?

Yep! TOMORROW it is! I get a flight into BWI around 1 30PM... I'm coming from Colorado so I'm losing about 3 hours?

Best of luck to everyone going! See all you session one-ers tomorrow!

For the classes and workshops and stuff do we have to wear kakis or are jeans okay?

I think that khaki or jean shorts will be fine and...

IT'S TOMORROW!!!!!! w00t!

I would suggest athletic shorts. You really want to be comfortable and no one really cares because some sessions you have intro to martial arts. You don't have time to go change and you might want to be in athletic shorts.

Now that my son is off to SS1, I have a question. Will there be an online site to see photos of what is going on there?

you'll get a schedule showing which classes you have on which days and when they are so you'll know when to wear comfy shorts (for martial arts and whatnot).

I don't think there is an online website with pictures from NASS. For parents who came to pick their kids up there was a ceremony and I remember a powerpoint slideshow thing of pics. They also played a slideshow of the photos the night that Sea Trials was over. It's basically just photos that the squad leaders themselves took on their own cameras. My squad leader posted our pictures on Facebook and then sent us the album to view.

Any parents hear back from your kids yet? How is session 1 going and what not. Any kids that get back from session 1 on Thursday, post and tell us how it went. :)

hmmmm, if the schedule is the same as last year they should be starting sea trials soon and they'll have indoc tonight!

Daughter said Sea Trials were in fact today but thought it was all day event? She also was hearing different stories on the length of the indoc? Seems I had been reading two hours??

last year during session two it was only a half hour, from 9 to 930 if i remember right

sea trials were half a day - we had classes in the morning and sea trials started after lunch. indoc was half an hour. not that bad at all. and then lots of squads got together and ate pizza and chilled out. it was probably the funnest day of the whole week.

From SS Cadre Daughter:

Surprised by lack of overall phisical fitness of a lot of the first set. Majority can not pass CFA and significant number have light years to go to pass.

Within her squad are a couple of good candidates that have shown leadership attributes and overall the whole squad has a posative attitude and is trying hard and working together as a team. The kids that thought the Navy was Top Gun and fun had their attitude readjusted with a trip to Memorial Hall and a guided tour by Cadre daughter.

hersheybear - That makes sense cause she said she had two more seminars to attend as well. I had seen two hours for indoc and last night she thought 30 minutes but then later she was told all day. Scuttlebutt no different than when I was in I guess, lol.

The last time I heard from my daughter was Saturday when she was on the bus to the Naval Academy. I suppose I will hear from her tomorrow from the BWI airport.

Try not to worry, cmbtrr. Last year I didn't hear from my daughter, either. She was too busy from 0530-1130. For a week or so after she arrived home, we heard plenty! Like hersheybear, mine thought mini Sea Trials / Mock Indoc was the best part of NASS.
