Hi, when do we find out if we are National Achievement Semifinalist (or atleast commended)? I received the letter from the merit competition in the spring informing me that I was a high scorer, but nothing at all from the achievement competition has come yet. (I scored a 220).

Also, what is the cutoff score in order to be a National Achievement Commended or semi finalist? (this question is for my friends who scored 190 and 172).

You'll get the semifinalist letter by the end of September. I think 190 will likely make semi and 172 just commended. With 220 you are without a doubt going to be named semi. Also, if you don't live in the NE or Mid-Atlantic region you'll very likely be named semi in National Merit as well.

My brother's school got his letter in late August last year, but he got the letter in early September. So I would say by mid to late September you should know for sure. From the info I have gathered, a 190 generally will get semi, and then making it to finals has to do with grades and recs or something along those lines.

I'm waiting on the letter too, very anxiously.

"and then making it to finals has to do with grades and recs or something along those lines"

It's based on your score in your state. The highest scorers per state become finalists; it is possible to score higher than a finalist in a different state but not be a finalist yourself, and it happens every year.

Nope. 0ommended is based on your score in regards to the nation. Semi is based on your score in regards to your state. Finals is with grades and recs, but most semis move from semi to finals.

The NMSC Acheivment Scholar semi-finalist determination is not based on your score within your state. It is based on your index percentile within your region and the percentage of African Am. pop. in your region.

Someone in one region may have a different index than another in a different region, but they may both qualify. NMSC does not release what the index cutoffs are for the regions and other companies keep this under wrap.

The 2009 cutoff for refferred (I prefer to use the term commended) or higher was the 85% and those students were contacted last Spring. We will not know what the semi-finalist cutoff is, since this varies by region and is based on population and percentage statistics we are unware of.
