They've already picked from all the finalists? Was it letter/email? And congratulations!

They'll accept it tomorrow. Call first thing. Then fax. Then call to confirm receipt.

hey what do i have to get to be a national achievement scholar

hey do u know what i have to get to be a national achievment scholar

Yeah, you have to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) (http://www.nationalmerit.org/nasp.php)

To participate in the National Achievement® Scholarship Program, a student must:

take the PSAT/NMSQT® in the specified year of the high school program and no later than the third year in grades 9 through 12, regardless of grade classification or educational pattern;

request entry to the National Achievement Program by marking the specific space provided on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet, thereby identifying himself or herself as a Black American who wishes to be considered in this competition as well as in the National Merit Scholarship Program;

be enrolled full time as a high school student, progressing normally toward graduation or completion of high school, and planning to enroll full time in college no later than the fall following completion of high school; and

be a citizen of the United States; or be a U.S. lawful permanent resident (or have applied for permanent residence, the application for which has not been denied) and intend to become a U.S. citizen at the earliest opportunity allowed by law.

They also have the National Merit Scholarship (http://www.nationalmerit.org/nmsp.php):

"hey do u know what i have to get to be a national achievment scholar"

I think the qualifying score is 190 on the psat but i think 200+ qualifies you for national merit commended as well... Im a national achievement scholar who will be entering college in the fall. I got a 201 psat, 3.5 gpa, and 1950 SAT(1340 math+verbal)... hope that helps

Its different depending on where you live and what the others around you have. The top 1600 in the nation (done regionally) I believe are recognized as semi-finalists. This is done soley by your score. Then 1300 are finalist and 800 are winners.

For national merit it's the top 50000 in the nation are recognized, 2/3 of them become commended, the 1/3 highest are semi-finalist, this is also based solely on your score.

I don't know where you're from but if you're from the coasts you'll probably need higher than what the midwest needs to qualify.

Basically, you can't really aim for any score, just aim to be in the top of the nation.

alright thanks...i got a 202 on my psat 1960 sat and like 3.3 gpa but yea thanks!

you will be a NA scholar and probably NM commended if you live anywhere outside of the northeast

alright thanks...i live in texas

Hi, everyone. I was wondering if you become a semifinalist, do you need an SAT score? I've only taken the ACT. My PSAT score was 198. I live in Kansas.

No. To be designated a semi-finalist is based solely off of your PSAT score. To be a finalist, however, and then a winner, you must fill out an application, an in order to "prove" your score you need to take the SAT, and during that time you'll send off your SAT scores to the Nation Merit foundation etc. So you want to take the SAT to advance to finalist status but semi-finalist status is based only on your PSAT score. I'd say you have a good shot too, A girl at my school got semi-finalist with a 197 and we live in Missouri.

So what would I most likely be with a 212 on my PSAT? NMSF? National Achivement Semi? (I'm black.)

Where are you from? It's done regionally.

I think you're pretty good on the NA Semifinalist status. You'll probably be commended or even a NM semifinalist depending on where you live. IT would be a tight NMSF though, in Missouri last year I think the cutoff was 213.

You can pretty much bank on being at least an Achievement Semifinalist and National Merit commended, congrats.

Way back in April, I first got the letter that notified me that I was a Nat'l Merit Scholar. However, I didn't get anything saying I also qualified for Nat'l Achievement Scholar. If you qualify for both, how are you told? Should I have gotten information about it, or is anyone who qualifies for something just generically called a "Nat'l Merit Scholar" on the notification letter?

I suggest calling them to learn what happened.

I knowfrom my sons' experiences that if students don't advance beyond semifinalist, they get a notification letter in about Jan. of senior year.

My bet is that they sent a certificate to you at your school for your school to award it to you, but the school forgot to do so.

Oooh. (I had an entire post before it clicked)

What sort of letter did you get? Was it a notification being like "You're being recognized by National Merit, what two colleges do you send your scores to?"

Yeah, because thats the only letter you'll get like that. They don't release the info for National Achievement semifinalist-ness until October of your Senior year, I believe, and your school will probably get the info before you do.

The thing is that National Merit is way bigger than NA so just being recognized by NM (the top 50000 scorers I think) get something special. Not knowing your status at this point is a good thing, because that means when that big book is out, theres a chance that you'll be in it.

...or maybe not. It's been a while, I'm sorry if all the mumbojumbo didn' even help

Does anyone know when National Achievement semi-final notifications will be sent to schools this year? Looking at this thread, it appears that last year notices were received by schools in late August. Has anyone been told by their school that they have advanced to semi-finalist status?

bump {10 characters}

I Havent been notified and keeping my fingers crossed. I got a 187 so I guess im borderline here. I wish I could have used my Soph scores 201. Oh well one bad day keeps me from NMSF or even commended.
