I know that one must get a 4 or 5 on 8 tests in order to qualify, but I am a little confused. First of all, do both the AP Calc AB and BC tests count as separate tests... or is only one counted? Also, do both the economics (macro and micro) and government (US and comparative) tests count as separate tests or not? Thanks so much!

…yes. They’re seperate AP tests. If they were combined they would be one test

the AB subscore does not count as a seperate test. You have to have taken the AB one year and BC the next.

@vlines- Can u not just take both in the same year?

You can take both exams separately in the same year, but that is stupid and pointless.

can you fail an exam and still get it if you have 8 4s or 5s and an average above 4???

justink… yes

YES! Thanks, I guess I will be getting one then :)))

@kalanov- How is it stupid and pointless?? For me, at least, I probably will not need it for the AP National scholar award… but what if someone has 7 APs and needs one more for the award… Then is it stupid and pointless??? Obviously it isnt.

They do give both tests at the same time. You would have to take one test as a late exam, I guess.

yeah I would have to. I was just curious… I probably will not do it for the sake of taking another test- but that all depends on what courses I will take next year…

It’s explicitly stated by the collegeboard that you can’t take AB and BC in the same year, late test or not

@iambenk- Thanks for the information. I forgot about that rule haha.

I have a question about AP awards, as well. I have 8 tests as of this year (all with scores of 4 or more), yet no awards show up on the score report (and I know where to look).

Do they show up a year late? Will I only see the National AP Scholar Award on next year’s report? If so, where can I get confirmation that I’ve got the award? I would like to be able to mention it on college applications. Thanks!

@besjbo: Awards are issued in the fall of the AP Exam year, so Fall 2011. You will get a certificate in the mail. I’m not sure what schools you are looking at, but AP Scholar Awards aren’t USUALLY the most prestigious. I’m not saying they have no value; rather, I’m just saying that their value is not the greatest (2 or 3 on a scale of 10). For values/rankings, see another CC forum which ranks top awards, honors, research programs, etc.

For the AP awards, only one AP calc is counted; AB or BC depending on which score is higher. There’s no point taking the AB test if you’re planning to take BC.

@justink
You’ve also got to consider the averages of your scores. For those on target for National AP Scholar, even if you took over 8 exams and failed one, you have to average a 4 on ALL AP exams.

Is it possible to get each award as you go up? For example, I think I qualify for AP Scholar. Next year, I might qualify for AP Scholar with Distinction. Would I still get the AP Scholar Honors award as well (the one below Distinction)??

No, you only get the highest award that you qualify for in one year, besides the other awards, e.g. APID. In your case, you’ll get AP Honor and AP Scholar with Distinction.

Do the awards account for anything besides a minor boost for college apps?

Last year (Junior), I was not aware of the awards so I only took two AP’s (and got 5’s). Next year, I’m taking four and Distinguished AP Scholar should be an expected thing. By then, is it only gonna serve as a piece of paper congratulating me? =.=
