National AP Scholar

I'm a little confused on what the requirements are exactly to receive this honor. I know its 8 APs with an average score of 4 or more, but is it in your whole high school career or before your senior year?

Personally, my school offers 1 AP sophomore year, and I'm thinking of taking 5 APs junior year, so should I self-study Stat and HUGE just to get the award, or will I not need to?

It’s 8 APs with no score lower than 4 – a big difference! My son had a 4.625 average over 8 tests and didn’t qualify.

My son self-studied 4 AP subjects sophomore year and took 8 AP tests that same year in a bid to get the National AP Scholar title wrapped up before he applied for college (he’s a 3 year graduate). He missed by one point: six 5s and 4 and a 3 (his APUSH teacher didn’t cover the material past 1955 and my son was too busy with all his other APs to read and fill that gap – naturally he got a bunch of Reagan-era questions!).

In the end, I’m not sure it matters – he still got the AP Scholar with Distinction title and that was worth noting. If you’re going to try for it, you should probably add a 9th test as a safety – but be warned, taking 8 APs the same year can be quite exhausting!

Of course you can qualify during your senior year (or last year, in my son’s case), but it won’t matter on your college apps and, after you get into college, the title is largely useless.

It’s actually 8 scores of 4 or more,

and an average score of at least 4.

So,
eight 4s is fine,
eight 4s and one 3 isn’t, and
seven 5s and one 3 isn’t

So only AP tests taken Soph & Junior year count towards the honor?

bump 10 char

really, do APs in freshmen year count? I thought they did. Please someone tell me! Thanks!

i think its supposed to make sense right? any test you take counts. any test. if you take the 8th test your senior year, you still get the award but obviously you just get it too late to put it on college apps. so, to have the award for college apps, you must take a total of 8 AP tests and get 4s or 5s on all of them before your senior year.

and for what its worth i dont think national scholar means much anyways. i mean, it doesnt actually show anything if you think about it. so, its nice to take ap tests, and it can be worth it to self study so you can get the award or whatever, but dont make it seem like a bigger deal than it is since thats pointless
