@STEM2017 I was just thankful we weren’t right there. Then all I could think of all night was that poor girls’ parents who were going to get the call every parent dreads. This is why I have been so reluctant to have my son go to college 9 hours from home. But he has to leave home at some point I know!
@drjdillon Thanks for your feedback. I’m sure it was tough to get over that tragedy while you were there…I’m happy to hear about the internship opportunities. My nephew graduated from Ohio State last year and his feedback was that the students had to go out on their own to find them…maybe they have improved that process now?? But, like anything, a lot is up to the student to take advantage of everything a big school has to offer. I’ve heard they have some new dorms - did you get to tour any of the new ones? And do freshman get to choose them. Did they say how long we have before the residence halls start filling up? Thanks for your guidance!
@Rosie2017 Yes we did get to see the new dorms. They are very nice. They did say most freshmen would get the typical dorm set up with 2 kids to a room and the community bathroom. I liked the bathroom set up though. There is a shower and toilet in each little “room”. These “rooms” are lockable. So there were 4 or 5 “rooms” with a shower and toilet in them. Does that make sense?? Then they had 6 or 8 sinks with mirrors above them outside of those toilet/shower rooms. They didn’t say how quickly they would start filling up, but I know they send out materials in the order of which you paid your acceptance fee. The Business Scholars program is in a new dorm, so if my son gets in to that program he will be in a new one. The Global Business Learning Community you can still apply for until April 17. That is a little farther away, but in an old Holiday Inn so the rooms are bigger. We didn’t get a chance to see that, except from the outside. The dorms had a nice study area on each floor. They had the larger suites on the end of each floor. The ones we saw had wings separated by gender. There are floor plans for each dorm online. I would definitely take a look at those if you haven’t already. It will make more sense than I can explain probably. Ha!
@drjdillon What a terrible tragedy… my D mentioned that she heard about it through the facebook groups…we knew exactly where it was because of our visits. So sad and horrible for that poor family. I’m sure it was disconcerting to hear about while on a visit, but I’m glad you were able to get more info about Fisher and campus. My D is also waiting to hear about businesss scholars. It seemed like the business college really surrounds the kids with a lot of support, although it worries me a little to hear from a former student that they don’t get much help finding internships…I felt like they talked about them a lot and it seems like there was a lot of assistance for the students. Do you feel that the scholars program is a strong complement to the program and would it be strong enough without that element?
@pop424 I do feel like it is a strong complement to the program, but I think the program stands on its own merit too. I’m surprised about the comment about not getting much help. All of the students who spoke said they are great about helping get internships. They did say though that you need to get involved and definitely not be afraid to come in and talk to people. Also they said to visit the job fairs early, even though they rarely hire freshmen interns. They said it is still good to make your face known to companies. Interesting really!
My S received National Buckeye and Provost scholarships through mail, letter was dated 2/10/17. Very grateful, he was admitted into the Engineering school for Computer Science and offered to apply for scholars program. None of the programs seemed to line up with Engineering though, so he will not pursue scholars. As many posters have said, this makes OSU closer to in state tuition for us in Michigan. Also accepted to UW Engineering, but they have no $$ of OOS kids, but very impressed with their Engineering school, facilities and campus overall. By the time we found out he was admitted to UW, he had little turn around to time to apply for their scholarships as most were due 2/1. Taking an admitted student tour next week at OSU to see the comparison to UW.
