Ok I’m kinda confused now: am I supposed to fill out the Common App in addition to the Questbridge app?

[QuestBridge National College Match - The Application](http://www.questbridge.org/students/application_information.html)

You need to apply to Questbridge in order to be matched and in order to apply for schools, you just attach the supplement for each school.

Ds says the app is up. Good luck, everyone!

some schools need the common app entirely I think…
even if you forward the QB app

Did some schools drop QB? I see there are 25. I thought there used to be more …

okay i’m really confused… help

so if i already decided to apply early decision (for a school not partnered with quest bridge), but still want to use quest bridge, do i apply reg decision? do i just send in quest bridge’s app? how does this work… gah this is confusing

Claremont McKenna dropped QB. Check this link [Finances Force QuestBridge Hiatus - Campus](http://media.www.claremontindependent.com/media/storage/paper1031/news/2009/02/15/Campus/Finances.Force.Questbridge.Hiatus-3630587.shtml)

@thisismy_name: Most people use QB for the Regular Decision process. This was answered a few posts back, but here’s the consensus:
*Apply to QB but opt out of the Match process.
*Apply to your ED, non QB school, and if you don’t get in (deferred/rejected), continue with QB.
*Apply to your schools on QB regular decision, and apply to your deferred ED school through RD.

Ta-da! That was easy! QB really isn’t that complicated as it doesn’t put that many restrictions on you. It actually exists to relieve restrictions on students that might otherwise have to go to community colleges due to funding issues.

I don’t agree that most people use QB for RD. Most use it for the match and RD.
If you are interested in non-binding schools, you have nothing to lose in the match.
Bad idea to apply ED if needing financial aid, which all QB applicants do.

Wait, wasn’t that what you said a while back? That most people get in through RD, and some don’t even send their applications to match because they don’t know which one to pick? I guess I was unclear. Why is it a bad idea to apply ED through QB? Or are you only referring to other ED programs?

Often schools will allow extensive bartering in the case of ED (outside of QB). If a student simply has no means to attend, then there are ways to either find more funds or officially release the student from the agreement. I’ve heard of this happening, but it may be rare or obsolete now in this economy. Michele Hernandez (I think) touched upon this in her book. If you’re really stuck on a particular school, you should apply ED.

I know someone who applied ED and was able to barter for a grant of 10K more per year. That isn’t a small sum, and it seriously put a dent in her overall package (she was getting 28K per year already, it ended up being about 6K per year from her side).

Everytime I read that website I learn something new! I had read right over this part: “You may rank as few as zero colleges or as many as eight of QuestBridge’s 25 partner colleges.”

So, let me ask again, just to be sure: If ds is sure he’d attend Rice if matched, then he should QB because even if he’s not a finalist he can choose to go RD through Rice. Nothing lost, right? And because we make less than $60K, the financial package would still be loan-free. So, QB would just be another way to increase his chances, plus it’s free to apply this way, right?

YES! If you apply ED to Rice normally, you aren’t guaranteed a full package, but are still bound to the school. With QB, you’ll get the same chances to admission AND the financial aid.

So they FINALLY released the application today, but as I was just skimming through it there are a lot of unclear things that I’m going to have to email Questbridge about.

Question - when using the two tables provided to calculate unweighted and weighted GPAs, what is a unit? Is a unit a credit? So for example:

If I got a A- in the first semester of a year-round AP class I would do .5 x 4.7?

HELLLLLP!

How do I calculate my unweighted GPA?

An unweighted grade point average (GPA) is reported on a 4.0 scale. If your school does not provide you with an unweighted GPA, you will need to calculate it using the following table:

Grade Points
4.0 93-100 A or A+
3.7 90-92 A-
3.3 87-89 B+
3.0 83-86 B
2.7 80-82 B-
2.3 77-79 C+
2.0 73-76 C
1.7 70-72 C-
1.3 67-69 D+
1.0 63-66 D

To use this table, find the grade point value of your final grade in a class (for example, a B+ is a 3.3) and multiply it by the total number of units the class is worth (for a five unit class, multiply 5 x 3.3). Do this for each of your courses in grades 9-12, adding the grade points as you go. Then, divide by the total number of units you have taken. For example, if you have taken only three classes, each worth five units, and you have received an A, B+, and A-, calculate your GPA as follows:

(5 x 4.0) + (5 x 3.3) + (5 x 3.7) = 55, 55/15 =3.67, or a 3.7 GPA (you can round to the nearest tenth for this application).

How do I calculate my weighted GPA?

Your weighted grade point average (GPA) must be reported on a 5.0 scale. If your school does not do this for you, you will need to calculate your weighted GPA using the following table:

Grade Points (non honors class)
Grade Points (honors class)

4.0 5.0 93-100 A or A+
3.7 4.7 90-92 A-
3.3 4.3 87-89 B+
3.0 4.0 83-86 B
2.7 3.7 80-82 B-
2.3 3.3 77-79 C+
2.0 3.0 73-76 C
1.7 2.7 70-72 C-
1.3 2.3 67-69 D+
1.0 2.0 63-66 D

To use this table, find the grade point value of your final grade in a class (for example, a B+ in an honors class is a 4.3, and a B+ in a non-honors class is a 3.3) and multiply it by the total number of units the class is worth (for a five unit class, multiply 5 x 4.3 for an honors class, or 5 x 3.3 for a non-honors class). Do this for each of your courses in grades 9-12, adding the grade points as you go. Then, divide by the total number of units you have taken. For example, if you have taken three honors classes, each worth five units, and you have received an A, B+, and A-, calculate your GPA as follows:

(5 x 5.0) + (5 x 4.3) + (5 x 4.7) = 70, 70/15 =4.67, or a 4.7 GPA (you can round to the nearest tenth for this application).

Right, I understand that. I meant to ask what a unit is.

A unit depends on your school. Do you have trimesters or semesters (how grades are averaged).

For example: If you receive an A+ for the first semester and a B for the second semester and your school calculates grades based on semesters, you would use the GPA for one unit of A+ and one unit of B.

Also, does anyone know what constitutes an A+ according to Questbridge? A 97+ or 98+? There is a self-reported transcript and I don’t want to mess that up.

I made a Common App account. Are you guys applying to all your Match colleges through the CommonApp as well?

Some schools, like Yale and Princeton, do not take the QB app in lieu of the the Common App/Supplement. Some schools do let you just send in the QB app if you are a finalist.

But do I have to submit the Common App stuff by September 30th as well? Or is there a different deadline for that?

And you said Yale and Princeton, two schools that I am Matching, need the Common App. How bout Stanford? Thanks!

No, no, not by Sept 30. I know the QB app asks for your Common App code, but I don’t believe we need to send it in unless we are named finalist status and then have to send certain things for particular schools. I believe Stanford makes you send in the Common App also. (by Nov 3)
