National College Match - 2009-2010

@Mare Crisium and Julia: Good ideas…Now what if I wasn’t going to apply ED to the schools that I filled out supplements for Questbridge, could the same essays/application be used for RD? (I just don’t want to fill out supplements for all of them, then not be a finalist (because my mom certainly wont want to pay for all of those applications)

I’m not sure of the exact #, but about 9 of the partner colleges have fee waivers even if you are NOT a finalist, and several more of them you can either request a fee waiver through them or the GC office at your school. I believe at my D’s school, she was given 4 or 6 (can’t remember) waivers. So between the QB automatic waivers for non-finalists and you GC, you should be pretty much be covered. I think you can request fee waivers through CollegeBoard as well.

Ahh so many deadlines! I plan to start and finish all 3 Questbridge essays by the 1st, start and finish all supplements for my 4 QB Match schools by the 31st (while editing the QB essays). The autobiography essay is the hardest thing I’ve done in my life! =[

@tomjonesistheman: Ugh same here T_T the autobio one is pretty tough. I plan to be totally done with it though by the 5th and then only editing…Also i know that once i have all the QB ones done i’ll be on a rolee with the essay writing. That always happens XD

Ha, I’m in the same boat as you guys. The autobiography thing is sooooooo hard! It’s just I want to explain my whole life but it’s just not enough!

btw thanks MOM! where did your D go to school? Was she a questbridge match recipient?

D was a match recipient to Amherst.

Ds is struggling with the autobiographical thing, too. The others are mostly done.

if i have a really low SAT score [1500] but i only took the test once and plan on taking it again in oct - would questbridge consider that? or am i just screwed?

@hiili: Well how are your actual grades? GPA, Regents grades? If your SAT right now is not representative of your actual grades, and you say that you are planning on retaking it, then there’s a big chance they will disregard it for the fist round (becoming as finalist). However if you choose not to send them at all, be aware that it would make becoming a finalist way harder.

I’m a little confused now. Should the Common App info (extracurricular list, short answers, etc.) be similar to the Questbridge application info?

Also, would it be okay if my Common App main essay was similar to my QB autobiography? For example, if I were to apply to Stanford, would I have to write: 1) 3 QB essays, 2) Common App essay (similar to QB autobio), 3) Supplement essays?

Last question: There is an intellectual question essay for Stanford. Should the topic of this be different from the topic for the Questbridge intellectual essay? Thanksss!!!

@Tomjonesistheman: For your fisrt question (extracurricular list, short answers etc) are exactly the same on both the QB app and the CommonApp. My CommonApp essay and my autobiographical essays are pretty much the same thing. And a Colgate supplement essay that i have to write is exactly one of the QB questions, so i’m just gonna copy + paste that. I don’t see a problem with doing that because if they are the same questions on the CommonApp and on QB, why kill it by trying to do 2? You’d only be giving the admissions people more work.

That’s just my take on it though. If you have more to say then the QB app provides space for though, you should just do all different essays.

Should I provide my teachers with the recommendation letters for colleges for RD, along with the one for the National College Match, or should I wait for my results before asking them to write the RD letters?

tomjonesistheman: For the Standford question, it all depends on how you want to approach it. If they’re really similar, then paste the same thing. But if there’s a moumental difference, I would write two different essays, exspecially because you want to stand out.

hiilikeyoux3: I answered this question for you yesterday I think. Go back a couple of pages where I posted my conversation w/alexandra… that should help you a lot.

Narusakuu: I’m pretty sure you’re allowed to use the same recs for both the QB and the RD apps. I’d just tell them to save the recs on file or send them to your counselor so you can use them for RD and anything else you need to.

Once you have your rec’s from your teacher’s and GC, those are the same that are needed for your ENTIRE application process. A rec is a rec. I know my D’s two teachers had them saved after writing them for QB. She made finalist, but was of course continuing her apps for non QB schools, so she gave them addressed envelopes so they could send them. They simply had to print them, put them in the envelope and mail. No big deal. Early rec’s is actually a benefit to QB applicants. You are not asking the teachers in the same time frame as most of your classmates will, so you have the benefit of having them write them early.

yes but wouldn’t they have to re-write recs because of different forms? (examples: Questbridge rec, CommonApp rec, Columbia rec, USC rec, all using different online forms, etc) I thought the recommendation for QB was done online in their special form… the way you describe it sounds more like a hard-copy general letter rather than an electronic form. I guess I don’t really understand how it works from the teachers’ side. If anyone could describe it to me, it would be helpful.

They can cut and paste whatever they have onto each form, it’s no big deal. They will write ONE rec, and that will be used for you, whether you apply to 1 school or 20.

I am also wondering about the autobiographical thing. I asked this already a few weeks ago but didn’t get the answer I was looking for.

When they say “autobiography”, do they want an overview of my life (*e.g - I was born in ____ in _____ with 2 sisters and a brother. My Dad was a ____ and My mom was a _____) *or do they just want any kind of essay that will show who I am in any way whether it be through a broad narrative, a detailed description on a memorable lunch I had with my family, etc…?

^^^^^

Not so sure if that is what they want, I can’t say. D wrote hers on how “Hooked on Phonics” taught her to read, and the impact of early reading had on her life. There was NOTHING in the 800 word essay about “I grew up here, and did this and that”. That being said, that was just her essay, so I of course do not know what they are looking for. </p>

Just write from your heart, about something that in your childhood impacted you and compelled you to achieve above everything else. Write about something that is interesting, not blah blah blah, What cute story does your mom or dad tell still to this day? It may be a little not cute to you, but it might make a great essay!

Think outside the box.
