Does anyone know what the National Hispanic Scholar cut off score is? My son scored a 191 on the PSAT (Texas) Selection Index in the 93% (junior). He is hoping to receive an honorable mention from National Merit.

From what I can figure out from what has been posted on boards, the cutoff is typically around 180. for National Hispanic. I have never seen National Hispanic announce the cutoff. For National Merit Commended, the cutoff usually is around 200, 201.

A lot of schools that give National Merit scholarships also give them to National Hispanic Scholars. Check the schools on this list: http://homepage.mac.com/l_j/secondhome/National_Merit.html

Many offer wonderful scholarships for National Hispanic scholars.

I got National Hispanic, had a 195.

Thanks northstarmom!! I wonder why they don't post those numbers. I was glad to find the scale for NMC on this site. my son missed commended by 9 pts.

Thanks Mz - wishing you much luck in your future!

how do you know if you got hispanic scholar...i got a 208 but havent received anything

Well, if you're a junior (like my son) you may not find out until perhaps the fall (2005-06 school year). I was just curious what the cut off was since its not published anywhere.

National Merit sends out forms in April to those who qualified as the high scorers for the NM Scholar. The semi-finalist's are notified in September.

I got National Hispanic Finalist (highest... equal to NMF) and I only got a 183 (I am a senior right now)

Congrats Hopkinslax!! That's fantastic. Thanks for the info - appreciate it.

my son got a 192 but gpa is 3.15/3.7 weighted on 4.0-do they use weighted gpa?

Yes, they use a weighted 4.0 scale. My son was announced an NHRP semifinalist in May and finalists will be announced in September. If you have any questions, you can email the NHRP. Their contact information can be located at the College Board website under National Hispanic Recognition Program. They are great about back to you with information.

Please remember that cut off scores vary from state to state (just like the National Merit). Texas NHRP cut off score is 180 with the National Merit cut off score of 200.

Good luck to your son.

thanks; they said the range in maryland was 178-196

were announcement s made by school or nhrp--our school gc told son cb contactede to confirm hispanic status in april but no word yet- ithought no announcement til sept

The National Hispanic Recognition Program contacts high school guidance counselors in May, puts the list together over the summer, and publishes it in the fall. However, I am aware that cut off scores seem to be all over the map, and some students with high scores report on this website that NHRP never contacted their guidance counselor. JazyURM reports that the cut off in Maryland ranged from 178-196. That would imply that cut offs vary not state-to-state as stated publically, but rather county-by-county or zip code-by-zip code. The secrecy of the NHRP raises all sorts of red flags.

omg you ppl are lucky
