National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) @ Northeastern

I had a question about receiving the NHRP from Northeastern. My daughter by all indications has qualified for this and the expectation is that we will received notice/certificate in September. We will not be eligible for any financial aid. The folks at Northeastern told me that you can add the certificate when you apply or after the fact. The award was listed as $30k in 2018 and someone actually told me it could be higher for 2019 (although info is spotty at NEU and can differ depend on who you speak to about NHRP). As these discussions have come up in previous years, the understanding is that NEU will adjust your merit based on NHRP. My question is, does it matter when you show them the NHRP certificate and wondering why they wouldn’t require it for EA (which is Nov 1) as everyone will/should have it by end of Sept. It kind of feels a little like buying a car. Dealer gives me a good price and then I tell him I have a trade in and I get a better price vs. telling him I have a trade in upfront.

Do you think it matters when you show them your certificate? Should I do it during application or wait until after I get merit award? Also applying to BU which offers up to $20,000. So same question there.

Thank you!

They say they do award EA National Merit awards starting in March (the first batch) so it might be good to send it in at least after you have heard if you are admitted EA. Looks like you have to notify NMSF that NEU is your first choice by April 5… since you are not ED, you might have other choices/decisions come Spring.

Edit of above – NMHS needs to be sent to NEU admissions…

My eldest D applied EA 3 years ago and noted on her application she was a NHRP. She was awarded the 30,000 scholarship when accepted in December. We sent in the actual certificate in early spring. She also applies to BU RD listing she was NHRP and was awarded 20,000. I don’t think we ever send them the certificate, because she had decided on NEU. My younger daughter applied to NEU this year RD and also noted it on her ap. She was awarded 31000 when accepted.

I believe the schools get a file of of NHRP scholars from the College Board as she started getting scholarship offers from random schools, so they probably already know she is a NHRP or could check if they wanted to. .

Unlike National Merit, you do not need to indicate a top choice of school for NHRP.

Thank you very much. That is very helpful! I have read from others on here that if you are awarded NHRP, then NEU in many instances is giving the full $30K. Great to see your daughter this year get $31k! Could I ask where you were from a financial aid perspective and whether that mattered? We will not be getting any financial aid.

Your financial aid status should not effect merit aid. With D1 we would have been eligible for some Fin aid, but not 30K… With D2 and two in college she did get some workstudy and a sub loan. My thought was she got a bigger scholarship as tuition has increased, so as a percentage of tuition its about the same, but maybe they increased the scholarship instead of giving her a need base grant. I have not heard what others received this year. Regardless D2 got better offers elsewhere not based on being NHRP so is not attending.

Interesting and thank you. It seems almost ridiculous that there isn’t a database/list of some sort that shows all of the schools that offer something for those recognized for NHRP. I know a lot of people on this site have made lists but it’s just grunt work or by accident that people find this and not always up to date. You would think College Board could have some mechanism to collect that info. If you have the program that could offer thousands of dollars or free tuition you’d think that would be valuable to know what schools. It certainly changed our trajectory. NEU is a nice school but I wouldn’t pay $68k, but $38k changes the equation and the thought process to attend entirely. This is motivating me to build a database!

College board doesn’t run the NMS program.

Congratulations to you on this wonderful accomplishment! If it helps, my D18 received the NHRP certificate in the mail the first week of September so you have it in time for ED deadlines. Best wishes to you on this exciting journey.
